water in instrument cluster

  I have owned my K75s for nearly a year and a half, as its been so reliable I have not needed to consult on any real issues.  I have covered 4000, it that period, the only problems I've encounter a broken clutch cable and a leaking fuel tank both very easy fixes.  I am a liesure biker these days so I dont tend to go out when its rainning and I park my bike over night in my garage, so it hasnt seem much rain. That was until I needed to repair my washing, the bearings had gone so I used the beam in my garage to lift the drum out as its pretty heavy.  The washing machine repair went very well but required me to leave the Kbike outside overnight and ofcourse it rained.  This was unfortunate as rain water got into my instruent cluster.  At first the glass was just steamed up, a bit annoying but every thing still worked.  However  my speedo stopped working and them gear indicator started acting up, shows forth and fith gear okay but no third gear fith agian for second and forth for forth for first gear, the neutral light does not come on at all.
  I ve taken the instrument cluster out, the back has been off and I dried it for a couple of days on top of my radiater. I cleaned some rust which seemed to be shorting out  4 connectors on the printed circuit board at the very bottom near the centre.  Once the contacts were clean I sprayed them with electric varnish.  I ve just reconnected the cluster and the gear indicator is still the same I have not tried the speedo yet as my right hand tragkorb is a pain to get off to access the sensor. 
   What else can I do, the clocks are off just now and I cant put my head light and faring back on till I ve decided what to do.

speedo and gear indicator whack could be as simple as waterlogged sensors... it happens to me when i power wash my motobricks... all returns to ok once they dry out...


as fer moisture inside the instrument cluster... generally 7 here is whack... first its a foggy lens... then its the innard connections...



if your innards connections have been infiltrated by moisture which has resulted in whackness... gotts to dry them out and take a close look at that gasket install to avoid future whackness...

 Thanks for the reply Jo, the exploded diagram is exactly what i was looking for,  had a good look at the gasket, which is just an o ring and that seems fine I vasalined it when replaced it for added protection.  There are small cracks in the speedo and tacho glasses , plastics doesnt seem to mean the same thing, I was wondering if these could be the culprits.  How difficult is it to get the glass off. Just wrestled my right tragkorb off and tested my speedo sensor, at least the works now, i may even calibrate the speedo whilst I have access.

Consensus opinion about replacing the glass is to find a used instrument and rob it for parts.  Can't replace just the plastic unfortunately.

Use Karamba to test and repair your speedo. It can be used while the cluster is on the bike or on the test bench.

Read this to figure out your gear indicator/neutral light problem.

  I looked at  Karamba, I want to plug my lap top into my bike I just looks brilliant .   So you think its quite likely the waters gets through the cracks in the lense. just going to look at the other link.  Fascinating

There was an engineering change to the design of the instruments in August '89 where a Goretex filter was fitted to the instrument cluster housing to prevent condensation (Read this ).  Yours may be prior to this change; check for round vent holes on the back cover.

  i have located the leak, I remove the cluster from the lens and cover, water is getting in athe bottom of the rev conter cover where the seal has completely failed, I can get a craft knife between the lens and the cover.  I cant get the whole lens off so i am going to partially reseal the offending area.  I am considering putting the len and cover in the dish washer to see if it can dislodge the whole seal but worry the lens may cloud up.  My k75s is 1987 and does have the little air vents though the gortex is damaged on one vent.
  As I have gone this far I think Ill access the speedo potensiometer and try and correct my readings which are at least 10 % too high. I am looking at the cluster now but cannot figure out how to get the speedo off.
