Fuel tank off for anti freeze change?
« on: October 11, 2014, 04:50:11 PM »
I need to change my anti freeze and my '91 K75S. My Haynes manual says that to change out anti freeze I have to remove the fuel tank. I have not had the right side fairing off in a while and can't remember if the fill is accessible with the tank in place or not and can't see up there well. IIRC it is accessible with the tank in place but as I said it has been a while. Does not seem right that the tank has to be removed for this but hey it is a BMW. I probably will have the plastic off for painting over the winter, if I have to remove the tank I will wait until then. If not I will tackle it in the next couple of weeks. What do you guys think can I access the fill with the tank in place or not?

The tank doesn't have to be completely taken off.  It is possible to access the rad fill neck by moving the tank backwards until it is revealed.  Raise the seat, disconnect the fuel tank connector, lift the rear free of the rubber tank mounts and pull the tank backwards.  The length of the fuel lines may limit the distance you can move it rearwards, but if you tip it to the left once free of the front bumpers, it should offer enough room to access the neck with a funnel.

Thanks rbm, I have had the tank off several times back when I was trying to repair the original leaking tank. Too many times actually to be fun or interesting anymore actually. I just could not remember what it looked like under there. Your method makes sense as anytime I have changed anti freeze I always had to run the engine to get the air out etc. With the slide the tank back method I could run still run it. At this point I am thinking I will wait until I am putting the body parts back on this winter after paint. Appreciate the help.

Hey Johnny.

Thanks for the advice. Just to be sure you are saying that I should fill really slowly so air does not get trapped in the motors nooks and crannies during the fill. Is that the burping part or is there an additional procedure I need to use to "burp".

I always squeeze the hoses a few times to help burp the air out, works for me.
