Side Stand Upgrade
« on: May 17, 2014, 05:40:01 AM »
So I understand the sidestand is a bit weak on the K1100 (mine is snapped off) does anyone has anyone made an upgraded stronger sidestand or modified their side stand to improve the lean angle and strengthen the stand?

I was thinking of using my snapped stand adding a metal rod/plug to make the stand solid and possibly add 1/2" to its length. is there any reason this can't/shouldn't be done?

One of the factors to keep in mind when modding your stand, the resting stop when you have it folded up.......

I have seen some riders that have added a spacer(puck, machined block of aluminum, etc.....) to the bottom of the stand foot to help with the lean angle, but they also had to trim the shape of it to allow the stand to be able to folded up and not trip the safety switch.

First time I have heard of one snapping. You sure there wasn't a contributing ice dent in its past?
Lot of people don't realize the stands have grease fittings if it snapped at the pivot.

BMW sure did put a lot of angle on the side stand. It sometimes works to your advantage when the area is not level. That said a lot of us have made modifications to make it sit more vertical. Hock puck or piece of boxed aluminum on the foot are pretty common mods.

In my case the PO's were not lubing and a lot of wear resulted. The Stand was completely missing the bumper under the muffler when retracted.  I also found the fork was splayed out some from god knows what.  I heated it up bent it back straight and then added a couple shims to tighten it up. I also took a couple degrees out of the factory bend mid way down. Even with it cherry red with the torch my 12 ton press was needed to bend it.

For repair a plug would be fine but watch the weight. I'd think tube might be better then a solid rod.  If too heavy you might need to upgrade the springs or hitting a good bump or whoop may be enough to make the stand try to drop.
