Looking for first BMW, and hoping its a K75
« on: April 30, 2014, 02:52:32 PM »
I'm 56, live in Florida and haven't owned a bike or ridden one much during the past 15+ years, but its time to own one again.  I'm looking for a good used K75, preferably one with ABS.  I did find a 1992 K75RT for sale near me, but worried about the fairing being too hot for Florida riding.  I'd like to know if the fairing can be removed, basically converting the bike to a K75 Standard, complete with the trim around the radiator that comes on the Standard.  Is there anything about the RT's that would make this difficult or impossible?  In particular, from some photos I've seen it appears the water line that runs vertically down from the radiator, to the front-right corner of the engine, follows a different route on different models, or perhaps that's different model years.

The K75rt is a real toaster.  It will be easier to find the standard or other model than convert one.  If not going touring look at a 2013 Honda CB1100 lightly used or new are now deeply discounted and a better bike.  I have both currently.

Welcome to motobrick.com, Jerry.

All you really need to convert an RT to naked is a new headlight, some ebay turn signals, mirrors, and some ears to mount the headlight to the forks. You may want a windscreen too.

Here's the thread I started when I began my naked project http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=3186

My bike is an ongoing project. I'm always trying to make it fit a little better and ride a little smoother. I lived with the RT fairing for a year but for me it bogged the bike down. An unfaired bike is so much more fun for me.

If the bike is in very good shape and has reasonable miles for the price, the naked conversion isn't that expensive.

Now... converting to a K75 Standard with the BMW standard fairing is probably more trouble than it's worth unless you have inexpensive access to the BMW parts. The RT radiator is larger than the radiator on all the other K75's so you won't be able to fit a belly pan. I removed the steel grill from my RT fairing and bailing-wired it to the radiator. Low tech.

While I do like the retro look of the CB1100, especially the chrome fenders, its just not what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the link.  That answered my questions about the RT radiator.  Think I'll pass on the RT and look for a K75 Standard with ABS or a K75S.
