K75S Oil pressure light stays on after oil change
« on: October 18, 2012, 10:09:53 PM »
I have a new-to-me '88 K75S. I bought it in September and it has been on a buddy's lift ever since. The drive splines were shot and I sent them to Bruno in Canada. Should have them back next week.

So, in the mean time we have flushed and replaced the coolant, replaced the fuel filter, sent the instrument cluster to Austin, TX to have the odometer repaired, and replaced the instrument cluster and fairing. The back of the bike is still all apart.

So tonight we put the gas back in the tank and crank it up and let it run for quite a while. Everything is looking good. Then I drain the oil, replace the filter, and add four quarts of oil. When we cranked it up, the oil pressure light stays on, even after a minute.

Did I break something during the change? The light was not on before the oil change.

Check the oil filter.  I would guess either it didn't get screwed in tight, or sometimes the rubber gasket from the old filter sticks to the engine, so the new filter cannot seat properly because of the 2 gaskets.  Either way would allow oil to leak out and not activate the oil pressure sensor.

Check to make sure the filter is installed fully.

Also, make sure the oil pressure sender is connected to its wire.

You were correct. I did not get the oil filter seated properly.

Lesson learned.

Thanks,

I just had the same problem.  Filter not on tight, first time for everything.  Thanks.
