No Starter Motor After New Dashboard Install
« on: August 17, 2014, 03:49:34 PM »
Thought I'd start a new thread about this.  Just got done wiring up a digital instrument for the k100 project.  After I was done and confirmed I'm getting power to the starter button the starter motor wont turn.  There is anything from a buzz or hum coming from the relay box when in Neutral and when the clutch is in the lights go off like its diverting power to the starter but nothing happens.

My battery (off the tender) is at 12.2 volts and there are no hills around me to push start (grumble grumble).

I checked the fuses and only my horn fuse is burned out

Am I missing something here??

Hi,

I've checked out the link on starting issues but still stuck. I have an 84 k100rt. When I push the button to start, nothing happens, no click, no lights that dim, as if it just ain't plugged in. Here are some clues:

I've had the injector ramp off, the air filter box, the tank and the instrument cluster. The battery was also disconnected. So now, everything back together, everything works on the instrument panel but nothing from the starter. Tried pulling the clutch in. Measured the earth connection at the solenoid.
I'm thinking there's a connection I forgot to plug back in, but if there is I can't find it. Had no problems with the starter when taking everthing apart a month ago.
If I take off the plug to the solenoid, there are a red/brown wire and 2 black/yellow going to the same pin. I présume one of these should have 12V when I push the button but none of them give a reading.

Please help!

Did you tighten the bolts that hold down the starter?  I once slipped it back in, finger tight and then it did same thing.  Did you install new brushes, or just one?  Did you remember to install the power wire to starter?  Did you check the fuses?

Sorry to ask dumb questions, but all this has happened to me.

You should get 12V+ on the black/yellow wire when you push the button.

Next step would be to check if you get power to the starter button, remove the tank...biggest connector
on the RHS is for the RHS switch assy...you should have 12V+ on the black/green wire when neutral is
selected or clutch pulled.

Thanks,

Was just tidying the garage for the night, pushing the bike into one corner to make room for the car. Plugged the solenoid back in, pushed the starter one more time just in case, then in my frustation pushed it hard and the motor turned a little. Pushed again and it works! So maybe I got a little corrosion on the button? But thanks for the replies, I'm sure they will be valuable to someone someday.
