'95 K75 fuel tank snot
« on: October 16, 2013, 04:41:52 PM »
Hello all,
You might remember me as the guy who recently resurrected a K75 that sat outside for a couple of years.. but probably not.

Anyway, I've put about 300 miles or so on it, just around town, and had an instance where it started cutting out on me, like starved for fuel. I had to feather it back home. I pulled the fuel filter and it was plugged, I couldn't blow through it at all. So I put in a new one, took it for a ride, and it died on me about 3 miles from the house. Again, I feather it home while it's cutting in- and -out, nearly being run over by all the fine folks in my community. So I pull the new fuel pump and check the strainer.. completely covered in ethanol fuel snot. I can also see little balls of this snot around inside the tank, just waiting to be a pain in the balls.

So what's the best way to clean this crap out, or is there something like SeaFoam or StaBil that will break this stuff down so it doesn't clog the pickup and filter?

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

Shawn

I would open the tank up, take out the fuel pump, level sender, and all the wiring. Then hit it with a pressure washer and soap. Dry it out thoroughly (acetone shaken around inside and poured out).

you can putt some glass marbles in there with the acidtone and shake them around...

the bonnerbeemyard has the strainers I beleive...

I had some goo in my tank once on the 1st day of a 4 day ride... I used 1 20oz bottle of techron and 1 napa 3032 filter for 4 consecutive tanks of fuel and it cleared up... installed the 5th 3032 filter and never looked back...

That stuff is a bitch to remove. Check out the posts on my k100 race bike build for more info on how I got on. As much as I could tell, nothing really removes it fully but the worst can removed with contact cleaner, lighter fuel, and even methanol. All methods are messy, sticky and require a supply of rags and toothbrushes! Final tip, wear rubber disposable gloves and old clothes or overalls! :2thumbup:

Howdy neighbor! (I live at the other end of Chastain from you)

Drain it and dry it. Hopefully it didn't make it to the injectors.
Water in the tank is getting to be a regular complaint.
Make sure your gas cap is not leaking water into the tank. There is a foam rubber gasket that eventually needs replacing. It keeps the water out of the area where the seal is for the fuel. If it goes bad water will make it past and next time you open the cap it drops in the tank. Hinge on the cap goes to the rear. The notch you see with the cap open lines up with a drain hole that drains out the bottom of the tank.
