Have you got your bags on?
« on: August 25, 2012, 10:33:32 AM »
I thought I'd put this in a new thread to keep from getting off topic in the other thread.
Seems that here lately a couple brickers have had the side bags fall off of their bikes.
I'm not saying that there is a right way or a wrong way to secure the bags to the Z-rails of the bikes. This is what I do when I'm traveling more than my daily commute.
Yes I lock the lower catch as the 1st step.
I picked up 4 of these "not for climbing" bungee cords, though I can't remember where.

I loop the cord thru the remaining "hole" in front of the lock catch of the rail from the backside and then hook it with the clip and pull it tight.

I then run the bungee up to the top of the case. The thickness of the catch body fits perfectly between the case and the z-rail to help prevent the case from slipping "in" towards the bike.

I hook up the 2nd cord and loop it once around the top case bracket, than wrap it a couple of times around the side case handle and then hook the remaining clip to the clip of the 1st cord.

Granted, this won't work well for a bike without a top trunk. But you get the idea.
This works for me with my LT's and I have yet to loose a bag. Nor do I want to.
I have to give credit for this idea to OTG. He did it 1st, and it works.

YMMV.

The Z rails on my bike are a bit worn.  To increase the friction between the bags and the rails, I wrapped them in some Gorilla duct tape.  Incredibly sticky, and increased the size of the rails.  They are now a severe pain in the ass to get off, but I don't worry about them moving around at all.

Those are the coolest bungee cords that I have ever seen. Is there a name and/or model number on them?

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Very cool. If I had seen this a couple of weeks ago, I might not be looking for a new case option for my brick! *chagrin smile*

Almost lost my left saddlebag recently - I just happened to pull over on a ride to/from the coast to stretch, and noticed the left bag was wobbly and loose.
Turns out the allen bolts that hold the Z-frame to the bike had pretty much walked out of the holes and the whole thing was kind of just hanging off the bike barely.  Fortunate that on that day I didn't have much in the way of gear in the bags.

Cause? When I had buttoned up the machine after a recent clutch replacement had _not_ used any loctite on these bolts when torquing them to spec, since rectified all the way around.

Lucky to notice it in time...

I hear you there. I had the same thing happen to me when I got my 1st K and was having a dealer service it. When I got it home (100+miles) I found 2 of the fasteners hanging out of the brackets. Luckily no bags mounted at the time.
