Final Drive leak
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:59:13 AM »
I was going to reply to an existing thread, but it was old and warned me to start a new one, so if someone wants to add this to the old one fine with me..

So I got my 89 in my shop for new itres.  It has been run all season long, 6,000+ miles.  So it is sitting in there like three weeks while the tires are being mounted and I am away at a fire.  Up on the jack, level.  So I come back and there is gear lube on the floor.  It appears to come out of the breather vent?  as oil is all the way from top to bottom.  It has been sitting for three weeks, no leak all summer?  I drained the final drive and it was not overfull.  Any clues as to where or why?

The only way I can see it coming out of the breather cap is if somebody knocked the bike over. :dunno2:
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Yeah me to and that didn't happen, unless they set it back up again and my wife is way too small to do that, and she would have years ago when she ran into my prize RD 350, years ago....

You sure it's gear lube?  The shock can leak all over the rear end, mine did and confused me until I figured it out.

It is clearly coming from the breather, I can't quite figure out how it is doing it, as the Final Drive was not over full, but hey I will fill it back up (after I drained it) with Mobil Syn and see what happens.

Thanks Inge, I will replace the speed sensor o ring as I am doing a spline lube anyway.

Don't think I will replace teh final drive seal as it is clearly not coming from that area.

Weird to have it leak there.

Thanks

Another vote to check the rear shock.  My #2 bike (not presently running) would piddle on the back rim and tire when I had the cover off to play with it.  It bugged me and I thought I was in for a final drive service or something - but after cleaning thoroughly around the rear drive it turned out the shock was leaking.  As I had another shock on hand, the old one went straight into the rubbish bin.  I was wondering if I could salvage anything when the wife took it firmly and dropped it in the can.  Gotta pay attention to one like that.   Otherwise she's a sweetie.

I have heard of this but never seen an explanation but one thing I do know is that there has been a change of the breather somewhere along the line. I seem to remember it being something to do with water being able to get in. someone may be able to find something about it but there is one thing I am absolutely certain of and that is my lousy search skills as I could find nothing.

Last time I filled my fd after a bearing and seal replacement I put about 150ml of oil in and it was at the threads ! So I spun the back wheel a few times and "glug" the level dropped right back so it is possible to get an air lock in there. I guess a good run and an airlock could conspire to burp oilk if you're unlucky
