Progressive Fork Springs
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:37:31 AM »
Good Evening All,
My local dealer has a sale on a progessive fork spring kit for $50, I know they typically run between $60-70.
I know I'm not long from a fork oil change so I figure I could do the springs then too.
Has anybody had any experince with the springs, do you like them, how do they perform, etc?

Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.

Doesn't the RS already have the go fast stuff in it? I found this info;

The stock rate is 0.74 kg/mm for my K75S (and K100RS) racetech recommends 0.85 kg/mm.

Progressive sells a spring #11-1126 which they spec as 0.63 - 0.89 kg/mm if you add them up and divide by 2 you get
0.76 kg/mm which is essentially the stock rate!

The progressive will be softer at first then get firmer than stock. This is probably the opposite
of what you want. It should be stiffer to resist diving then softer to absorb big bumps.

Of course you have 1985 forks, some say those are the long/soft forks so my data might be incorrect...

The best setup would be a straight rate spring of 0.85 kg/mm (according to Racetech)

I scored a set of stock K100 springs on EBAY today for $25. I'm going to remove the
progressive "s" springs in my forks and use the K100 straight rate. I might need to
cut a few inches off to get the right firmness. I'm guessing 2.5" would change them
from 0.74 kg/mm to 0.85 kg/mm...

I don't know what your OEM springs are like but I did my LT and it made a big difference in the ride. Probably need to upgrade the rear also if you haven't already.
