Temperature Gauge for Barnfind
« on: April 11, 2026, 11:32:11 AM »
Ok Guys I have acquired a temperature sensor and  gauge. My question relates to running the sensor wire. It seems there may be a cavity ( wire chase ) that runs from under the bike to the top of the timing cover. See photo of existing sensor, and exit point. First and foremost, removing that timing cover is more of a PIA than it’s worth? Is it subject to leak? TIA

If you're threading that wire along the same route as the oil sensor wire, the timing cover isn't removed. The Hall sensor cover is removed. It has a gasket. The gauge wire can be threaded through the grommet in the upper end of the wiring channel. That's it. I reused the Hall sensor cover gasket when I needed to replace wiring to the oil pressure sensor.

Motobrick member frankenduck has supplied a few observations in his thoroughly helpful website. Look at this link.

In this photo, the timing assembly has been runseated. You won't touch yours. Nothing is going to leak if nothing has been leaking before this. The green arrow points to the opening that receives the Hall sensor wire and its grommet. The red arrow points to the harness for a what could be temperature gauge, and the thin wire adjacent to its right is likely the oil pressure gauge wire, though I can never be certain what owners are doing with their rides.  :laughing4-giggles:

Something I learned just yesterday that made my life a lot easier when doing this job is taking a small piece of string of any sort, and using it to help pull the wire through the hole. What I used was some of the orange string for a string trimmer taped to the end of the wire. The bright orange color makes it far easier to see in that little hole so you can grab it and pull it down through. Best of luck!

Thanks guys...Laitch, its an '85 so the wiring harness is not there. Neither is the tank float...I believe she has the original fan so I want to watch the temperature in case she fails. Until yesterday I was riding on tires dated from 2006!

You seem to be answering a statement I haven't made, Attabeach.

The OEM gauge uses a short cable that attaches to the coolant temperature sensor at the pump, runs up through the channel under the Hall sensor cover and heads upstairs to connect with the gauge harness. You don't have that harness because your Brick is a C model. frankenduck makes this clear in the link I supplied.

By whichever means you connect that sensor to the gauge, the Hall sensor route that starts though the wire channel beneath the pump seems the most protected from road grit; however it isn't the only route.

I'm baffle by your reference to the float. The only thing it has to do with this is that, along with a coolant temperature gauge, you don't have one of those either. :laughing4-giggles:

Personally, I consider that gauge more of a worrying gauge than a warning gauge. The temperature lamp suits my simpleminded approach to moto enjoyment. :laughing1:

My bad Laitch…I thought the 85 model pre dates that wiring harness. Turns out it was available with other models. My 94 standard has the harness…. As well as a fuel float instead of the two idiot lights. Thanks for the info.😳
