New rider from the Netherlands
« on: April 23, 2026, 06:46:25 AM »
Hello everyone, I am the proud owner of a 2000 registered K1100LT. Got it through an acquintance who neglected it after a bad fuel pump for a few years. Being mechanically minded (I'm always tinkering with my 2 VW mk2 Golfs/Rabbits in the US) I could take it off his hands for a bargain. This was early last year, so then I had a cool bike but no license! So finally this winter I got my license and I've been building the bike ever since I got it. Finally started riding it 2 weeks ago, I've put on about 500 km and absolutely love it, it rides so much better than the nervous 2 cylinder Hondas I had my riding lessons with. I've been finding a ton of useful information on this website in the time I was restoring the bike to be roadworthy but never posted before. However now I've come unto a misfiring/hesitation issue I can't seem to diagnose on my own so I figured this would be a good time as any to finally join the ranks here. It's awesome to see that this bike still has such an active and big community. This is my first experience tinkering with and riding bikes so it's a great help. I'm used to the VW forums for my mk2 Golfs but it seems that this community might be even bigger!

Welcome to the scrum, Kevin. When was your K1100 manufactured?

That's a good question! It was registered in 2000 so it's probably one of the latest models sold since they stopped making them in 1999 I think? From what I've found the models from 1994 onwards seem to be more or less the same so I just accepted that it was a "late/post 1994 model" and didn't bother to find out exactly when it was built. It seems that the post 1994 thing is most important when talking about ABS and the Motronic system. Do you know if I could decipher the actual build year from my VIN?

Welcome, Kevin!  Can you start a new thread about the running problem with all the details you can.  Then the brain trust can make some suggestions as the the cause and the cure.

You seem to have an understanding of the Motronic/ABS variance by manufacturing year. The existence, appearance and location of some of the components also differ after '93.  If you want to try verification, put the last seven digits—or the only seven digits you have—into the serial number box at this site and let us know what comes up.

According to the website I've got one produced in the 2nd month of 1999. Makes a lot of sense since it was bought sometime in 2000 by the first owner. So it's one of the absolute last K1100s to be produced since according to this website the last VINs are from the 4th month of 1999! Interesting to see that they continued producing the LTs for 3 years longer than the RSs.
