Don't want to leave this thread without an answer - we all dislike threads where we never find out what the fix was, don't we?
So, the new fuel pump I installed was good, and my rebuild of the wiring loom from the junction box and battery to the cooked and melted wires from the starter motor jamming on was good. So, yay for me not being a total hack as a mechanic. Maybe just a partial hack.
Collateral damage from the starter motor fire was the 3 fuel injectors, and they have all tested bad, so they are being replaced this week by Paul's Garage in Cedartown GA. That's a job that is beyond my skill level, so I'm happy to have him do that. I should be back on the road some time next week.
