EBC FA 171 Brake Pads
« on: May 25, 2023, 01:29:04 PM »
On Monday I set out to change the brake pads on my '91 R100RT which are the same as used on our bricks.  With two new sets of EBC FA171 I began assembling my tools to find an older set of EBC FA171 pads in my parts bin so I decided to use those and save the newly purchased set for another time.  What I found is that the older EBC set does not fit and is both longer and wider that what is needed.  The newly purchased EBC FA171 sets fit perfectly and matched the Brembo pads I removed.  I neglected to take a picture of the new EBC set for comparison with the old but used the Brembo in the pictures as they are the same size.

As you can see in the attached pictures both packages are EBC FA171 pads but are of a different size that is needed.  I have no idea how long ago the older set was purchased so returning is not possible but I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue.

The length(height) of those pads is puzzling.  I do know that at some point the ABS pads changed in width by something like 1mm, which is just enough that if you get the wrong ones they will jam in the caliper if you don't file the edges down.  (please don't ask how I know this)

The difference in width is so slight it can easily be overlooked, but the height difference of your pads is obvious.  I would send an email to EBC explaining the situation and include the photos you posted here.  EBC is a reputable outfit, and I would bet they would make good by you.

Update on EBC pads...

I waited for over a month for a response to my emails using the web form so I finally called the EBC USA customer service number.
Actually got a person to answer and specified the question was about motorcycle brakes I was forwarded to Robert.  After explaining the situation he was well aware of an issue with mislabeling some time ago and would gladly send me replacements just requesting that I remove the old pads from the packaging and throw them away.

Got them today 112350
