1987 K100RS Fuel Pump
« on: March 09, 2017, 10:51:37 AM »
Hey gang, I'm new to this forum so thanks for letting me in. I've got a 1987 K100RS in my shop. I was on a test ride recently and the bike just suddenly quit running. My first thought was fuel pump. With the gas cap open, ignition on, hit starter button, no hum heard from the pump. Remove the tank and try putting 12 volt power to the 4 pin connector, pump does not run. So out comes the pump. With 12 volts direct to the pump terminals it runs. (But the bottom of the tank is full of crud and there was no filter sock on the pump so I may just replace it anyway.) So I check the continuity of the wires that were attached to the pump back the 4 pin connector. I get continuity from the black wire (large terminal on pump) to the brown wire at the connector. The brown wire at the pump (small terminal) has no continuity to any pin at the connector. I see all these wires run through the fuel level sender. Is this a common problem, for pump power to stop at the sender? Replace the sender I guess? The fuel filter was loaded with gunk also so definitely a new one is in order. Any suggestions on the electrical issue are appreciated!
