Helmet Lock/seat button swap?
« on: January 07, 2022, 09:55:20 AM »
Discovered the seat retainer mechanism has a broken retainer “tooth” and will not hold the seat stud closed. This unit has the push button to release and helmet lock hook also. Not sure if the button in the locked position prevents the seat from being lifted when it’s working as it should. I have a donor mechanism assembly provided by a local shop with a K-Bike used parts collection.
My original mechanism is keyed same as IGN and side cases. Is there a way for me to swap my lock button into the donor  part with the good seat retainer tooth? Parts illustration shows them disassembled so possible? Do I need a key in the donor to tale it apart?

Found this on the ON This Site repairs guidance list, so looks like I can do this!

Latch in the Locked position will secure the seat and helmet lock.  The button can be depressed but nothing happens.  Latch in the Unlocked position will release the seat and the helmet lock when the button is depressed.  The key can be removed from the core in either the locked or unlocked positions.

Yes, you'll probably need a key in the donor to release the core, if it's like the other K-bike locks.  I've never done this particular lock so that's a guess.

The instructions above worked good! And no key needed to separate the assy. I choose to drill out the 4 small attaching spots, and the assy separates in 2 pieces, pulls apart. There are 4 springs in it, but they don't jump out. If held like it's mounted, should stay in place. Here's a few photos. My need is to replace the seat catch, as mine is broken off. Even this one shows "abuse" to the stud catch hook. I beleive it would be smart to push the button as the seat stud enters the lock and avoid counting on the Cam action to move the catch away. Just can see the damage it does to the catch hook. Just my $.02.
These show the 4 drilled out spots / the separated halves / and the hook I need / with a shot of the stud it catches. I'll save this catch lever and install it in my lock assy. It just pulls out of it's mounting place!

There's no need to drill anything. You can just use a screwdriver to pry the lock apart.

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.
