Fuel pump won't power up on modified K100
« on: August 24, 2020, 01:04:41 PM »
So I have an issue I'm sure I created myself. I started a 1985 K100RS scrambler conversion last winter. Then got sidelined and now I'm trying to get it back up and running.

The bike was running before I started anything. What I've done to it: installed a BEP, bypassed the BMU, cut a trace on the flasher module for LEDs, installed new bars, speedo, blinkers, brake lines. All the new electronics (speedo, blinkers, etc) fire up and seem to be ok. I don't think this bike has a side stand sensor, I can't see one.

Went to do first start up and it turns over but it won't start, followed the troubleshooting guide, and I hear no fuel pump when trying to start. When I apply 12v to fuse 6, the fuel pump fires up, which leads me to believe the pump and connection from the fuse to the pump are fine. Fuses all test good. Kept following the guide to the fuel injection relay, did a bench test on the relay itself which passed.

Started checking relay pins:

pin 30: 12v
pin 86: 12v when key turned
pin 85: 0v when starting  <- problem?

If I'm following the guide right, this is where it goes off to 'Electronic Module???' as the possible culprit. I checked for continuity between pin 7 on the ICU harness and pin 85 and I get nothing, which seems like it might be a problem, but at this point I'm a little lost on what else I can troubleshoot and any help would be appreciated.

I've done some searching and read a lot of posts about fuel pump problems, but most seem to be bad pumps, faulty connectors at the gas tank, fuses, etc.

Sorry I was wrong, there is continuity between the ICU and the relay.

Well I feel stupid, after a little contact cleaner and reattaching the ignition harness again and now fuel pump is getting power and the bike is running.

That's the intelligent approach, emdy—doing the simplest measures first.
