Raging against the dying of the neutral light

My neutral light started to flicker and periodically goes out completely. When that happens, I need to pull in clutch to start.

So, is it likely the switch or the stuff inside the dash?

The gear indicator LCD is long dead, so I can't use it to compare. I'm assuming there is only one switch on the brick that controls all of this? My boxer has a separate GPI and neutral switch, but I'm pretty sure it's an oddity.

Most likely the TGP switch on the transmission.

The TGP switch uses a Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) encoding to determine the current gear number.  There are three wires that encode up to eight gear numbers.  When the gear number is zero (i.e. transmission in neutral), all of the three wires are connected to ground.

you could verify the operation of the neutral detect / start enable circuit inside the cluster by disconnecting the TGP switch at the harness and grounding all three yellow wires.  That will simulate neutral.  The neutral indicator on the dash should illuminate.
