Final Drive play?

I was washing my bike yesterday when I noticed what seems a huge amount of play in the final drive.





Before I take it all apart to see what is going I would appreciate opinions of whether it seems excessive or is normal.

It's excessive and from what I can, see faulty rear pivot bearings might be the source. Here's a video although the entire procedure isn't recorded, much of it is.

I would guess that ANY play in the swing arm pivot bearings is too much.  Have you checked the preload on those bearings? 

I'm going to guess that something loosened up.  Let's hope the bearings haven't been damaged.

excess play to be sure. Has it been dis-assembled lately?
I ask because I just had mine apart, it would be very easy to re-assemble and forget all about the needle-bearing race.
When I pulled the pivot pins and dropped the final drive the inner race from both bearings fell away. If you failed to see this the final drive could be re-assembled with either one or both races missing. The wobble in the video could be caused by that.
it's a long-shot but possible.

I  just took it all apart and the bearings are totally shot, little needles spread all over the inside of the final drive.


Luckily I had actually already brought but not yet installed replacements so I am doing it now.

after a few miles of that whack id replace the drive shaft before the ujoints bust through...

It is all fixed now, I would post a video of the play now that I have the new bearings in but since there is none at all it seems pointless!


I used the bushings from rubber chicken racing that had been recommended on here before.

They seem great, I look forward to doing some miles and seeing how the bike feels now
