whats the go with this oily air filter
« on: July 26, 2018, 03:29:33 AM »
1991 k75 rt

got around to pulling out my old air filter and installing new one.

the old one had foam sponge on the top side soaked in red colored oil. extremely dirty and looked like the lung of life long heavy smoker

new filter completely different.

would i be correct in assuming the old filter i took out was a non OEM filter that requires oiling.??

I hope so  :yow

bike ran great with old air filter.
haven't been for a ride yet with new filter. i wonder if i will notice any difference.

Blackie your old one is an oiled type. They are no way near as efficient as the OEM ones. Inmates using them have reported that dirt and dust has been passed through. The OEM ones are over engineered and last for years and years. I'm on my second one in twenty years and the original is still perfectly useable.

Filters and oil questions is like opening a can of worms. Some people love K&N and some love OEM. There is information out there supporting both sides. However I've never found dust or dirt on the engine side of my filter. Do a search and you will find information.

Here is an interesting test, blackie, involving some OEM and aftermarket air filters and other parts.

thanks Laitch
well there you go, fairly conclusive test isn't it.
my bike has the stock standard exhaust system.

quite frankly I doubt if my bike could run any better than it does at present. (touch wood)

i am building up to do a check the valve clearances and to balance the throttle bodies
