Went to clean the ignition switch  one of my bikes to find that it was duct-taped together. I vaguely remember being the one who did that fantastic work sometime around 2007. It lasted for 10 years. That's long enough.

The main issue is that the white plastic bucket that the switch press-fits into is cracked. That's the part I'm looking for, see the arrow on the image.

The secondary issue is that one of the retaining tangs on the main housing i.e. the part that press-fits into the console is broken off. I can live with only one of those but it would be nice if it had both.

So, anyone have an ignition switch assembly they can let go cheap? Drake has one for $50 but I don't need the whole assembly or the key so I really don't want to buy the whole thing. If you have one you can let go, PM me.

If it is basically intact you should be able to get it 3D printed. I believe it was Filmcamera (possibly maybe) who was looking for projects to 3D print, and I suggested the ignition housing. Try sending him a PM to see if he got around to it.

It might have been Young Engineer. Here is the relevant thread. Interested members should send him a personal message. His Thingiverse page has gone 404.

I have a Prusa MK2S 3D printer and make useful things with it all the time but there are both design and structural limitations of additive printing technology. One of them is structural integrity with wall thicknesses 2mm or less, and the part in question is only 1mm. Another limitation relates to printing a contoured part on a flat print bed. You have to design it so that the 1st layer forms a solid base that subsequent layers can fuse to. But the most critical limitation is the cost benefit one. The part in question would take me at least a couple hours to replicate using Fusion 360, and that would be on the off chance that it would hold when the switch is press-fit into it.

Fact is, 3D printing isn't always a solution for a part that was initially designed to be blow-molded. The ignition housing would be a good candidate for it because it's big and thick, but the white plastic bucket that the switch bits fit into isn't. It might crack then I've wasted several hours and am back to square 1.

So, the switch works, it's just gerry-rigged. I can wait till 1) I see one on eBay 2) someone here has one they can do without or 3) I buy the one Drake's got for $50 which isn't a bad price for the whole thing, but I don't really need the whole thing.

Anyway, if anyone has suggestions for parts that could be 3D printed, add me to the list of people who can make them. Problem is, I don't see that many parts on my K75s that are both in demand and meet the design limitation requirements.

Thanks to kryder for sending me a working ignition assembly absolutely free after shipping. I swapped out the lock cylinder provided with the one from my bike no problem -- works like new.

This warrants a $20 donation to motobrick.com in kryder's name which will be PayPal'ed to the site admin presently...

Thanks, kryder and motobrick.com!

You're welcome Motorhobo. I had the parts you needed and passed them on. That's as it should be. We should all help each other when we are able. Many happy miles to you !
