Which speedometer gears?
« on: May 07, 2018, 02:28:48 PM »
Would you please help me with a speedometer gear question?

1985 K100RT, 49k+ miles, speedometer works (as of last night). It's been back on the road for one week, as of today (barn find).

Was there a factory recall that may have changed the color of the speedometer gears?

Darren at odometergears.com said MotoMeter gear #2 should be black. Mine is green with a white gear below, and an orange gear above. I can see teeth missing on the green and orange gears. Should be two photos from last night's disassembly attached.

The label under the seat says my bike is a USA, 49 state (not California) model, if that makes a difference.

It seems like I could order the odometergears.com Series #1 (US K and R models). I'd rather not pull the whole assembly again, just to count the number of teeth on the gears.

I am by no means an expert nor a vast treasure trove of knowledge but my 85 RS has the same colored gear combination as show in your photo. I've replaced all the gears over the life of my scoot, never had a black one nor have I counted teeth, just swapped with same color.
hope this helps.
cheers

I just did mine and they were orange, green and white.

Per a related post, I took my speedometer/odometer over to Jeff Caplan, the owner of Odometer Gears and he showed me how to replace them.  Darren may not have been sure of the application.

stokester, where did you get your orange, green, and white gears from? I didn't see that combination on odometergears.com.

A quick google/amazon/ebay search did not show matching colors. They all seem to say count the teeth.

I was hoping to find a relatively confident answer on what was in my bike. Then I would order, and only have to disassemble the speedometer one more time.

I was referring to the gears I removed from my '93 K75S and honestly don't remember the exact color of the replacement gears.  I can count the teeth if it will help, like yours the green and orange were chipped.

Darren is probably right and you required the US kit but if you would like to talk to Jeff Caplan, give him a call at 757.593.3478.  It's off his business card and rings his cell phone if you want to be sure of the kit.  You can drop my name as the K-bike guy who stopped by.

odometergears.com, Series 1 (US) for BMW K & R seems to be working great!
Owner Jeff said, now that I've installed their gears, I'll never have to think about them again. :-)

Speedometer/odometer/tripmeter calibration compared to a handeld GPS receiver shows that all three are very accurate!
Tripmeter was off by only 0.2 miles over an 80 mile test, which is less than 1% error.
