"German-made" OEM Fuel Pump, 43 mm diameter for 1993+ Kays - cheap

Thought I'd pass this along for all of you cheapskates that don't want to spend your child's inheritance on an OEM replacement fuel pump - $411.00 (#02  16 14 1 341 231)+ $58.00 for the strainer or  "sock" (#03 16 14 1 341 233) at a BMW dealer.
I saw a listing on ebay yesterday and it is the exact replacement for the 43 mm OEM VDO pump. No splicing and dicing required - same everything and no spade connectors so it would be easy to install on the side of the road..
The seller is in Poland.  I asked him where the pump is made and he responded...Germany - MTM brand.

The ad says it is for an R 1100 but it is the same part number as for the 1993+ Kays, (see above). 
Just the pre-filter sock from a BMW dealer is $58.00, plus shipping, of course.
This replacement pump comes with the fuel pump sock and is about $38.00 plus about $10 bucks for shipping from Poland. Less than 50 bucks complete. (I am a little skeptical that something made in Germany could be sold so cheap though).

Thanks for the correction.  So has anyone purchased one of these?


My 1993 K75S (build 11/92) has 75K miles and in retirement I plan on using it for longer trips rather than mostly commuting as I have to today.


What this means is that I want to replace and update components before failures.  I have a new fan, Spiegler brake lines on order, replaced the water pump seal, set the valves (#1 and #2 exhaust) and was considering replacing the fuel pump even without any obvious problems.


I've had this Brick since about 40K and have been replacing filters and fluids regularly to keep it the reliable ride it has been.  So do the fuel pumps seem to have a certain lifespan or do they generally fail from poor fuel, filter neglect or other reasons?

Good question.  Mine is original with 180K plus. but it's never been idle for more than a month or two in the winter or sat in stale fuel.  Still, probably wouldn't hurt to have a spare handy.

Mine has about 1/2 the mileage with the same history, never been idle for more than a couple of weeks (nice winters in coastal VA) and has never given me any problems.


So anyone out there with anecdotal evidence of fuel pump failure? Age, poor maintenance, bad fuel...?

I have never run ethanol fuel so never had any problems with my OEM pump (160,000 K's) which is now stored in the tail section. The 25 year old OEM damper is still serviceable. I am now running a Chinese copy be aware some are better than others for the last 1500 Km which has not missed a beat, and is a lot quieter. However all three of my mates bikes have had their pumps fail due to the pump dampers turning into Vegemite ( Black goo). All his  bikes have at some stage have been run on ethanol fuel. One of the pumps was eventually persuaded to run by soaking in white vinegar and applying 12v and switching polarity, eventually upping the voltage briefly to 18v and polarity switching freed it up. One of the other non functioning pumps was cut open and was full of rust. I believe if you are going to store any pump that has been running it needs to be flushed and then filled with an anti corrosion treatment. This treatment would have to be flushed out when recommissioning the pump back into service.

I'm running 10% corn fuel pretty regularly in my bikes.  However, in the near future I'll be switching over to no-corn for winter storage.  From what I have been able to learn, ethanol only caues problems when it is allowed to sit in the system for extended periods like winter storage.  Storing with stabilized no-corn should avoid those problems.

Stockster, you probably have the older 52mm fuel pump if you are looking for a pump for one of your listed bikes. They are readily available as drop-in replacements. Check ebay...I'm too lazy to do it for you.
