Type 3 tragkorb Latch Repair.
« on: November 02, 2017, 04:30:50 PM »
I managed to find a set of Type 3 for $80.00 AU for a mate of Gumtree, he got them for $60.00. They are in pretty good condition and with a bit of sanding and buffing would look as good as new.  These tragkorbs are going on his 1994 R100 with metal tubular tragkorb frames, and the tragkorbs are the same as the Bricks. However on one of the tragkorbs the latch that holds the tragkorb to the frame is worn and he reckons it moves around to much, and could possibly come loose. He brought it into work yesterday and it is definitely worn and the retaining rivets are loose.

I am hoping that replacing the rivets may tighten them enough. If not the only solutions I can come up with at the moment is to pack out the frame where the latch hooks on. And I've had a look at mine and it might also be possible to build them up with JB weld if I can manage to get into them. Has anyone managed to pull the latch apart, and managed to tighten them up, if so how? If any Ozinians have an good Type 3 latch of a destroyed set of tragkorbs send me a PM. He is coming around on Monday so I can have a look at them, hopefully by then I might have found a cure.
Regards Martin.

I have replaced the rivets and used a metal backing plate. Then shim them up by gluing on rubber pads.

:2thumbup: Problem I think is solved. I just tried a Laitch, MW solution on my tragkorbs which were slightly loose. I glued a piece of insertion rubber to the latch pad, and replaced the square pad on the back of the tragkorb with anther piece of insertion rubber. The tragkorb has now firmed up. I will try this on my mates tragkorbs on Monday, and hopefully it will fix the problem.

Hands on or hands off the bars.  :riding: I could try one of our backroads, but that test would probably be much too severe.  :hehehe

Laitch repair?  I think years of counseling with the right person could do the trick.  Especially if his diagnosis is tragkorb type 3?  I have seen this before, and yes, it will take time, patience, and understanding.....................and some type of filler to make him  feel whole again, secure, and not like jumping off the bike! ......................err......oh..... oops, Latch repair...............NEVER MIND! :giggles

Mate turned up yesterday with one tragkorb no bike. I ended up fitting the tragkorb to my bike, but I've come to the conclusion it needs to be replaced. One of the tragkorbs he is replacing is a Type 3 the other is a Type 2 and the reason for replacement. The retaining catch on the new one when locked sits back a 30 deg angle and does not engage the frame.

I suggested that he remove the latch from his old Type 3 and use it on his new tragkorb. With the faulty one removed I will have a better chance of seeing if it can disassembled and repaired. I did glue a piece of insertion rubber on the back of the tragkorb which should firm it up when the catch is replaced. and gave him a large piece of insertion rubber for future repairs.

As a weird aside he turned up with his tragkorbs locked and no key. My key fitted, a few years ago due to loosing one tumbler I replaced all my tragkorb locks with a set from either Motorworks or Motobins. And lo and behold my original key fitted. So is this happening twice a coincidence or are they all keyed the same. :dunno

I took my tragkorbs to a mates place and his keys fit my locks. One if my bike keys works on one lock and not the others.
