Hi from Sweden
« on: August 27, 2017, 05:53:53 PM »
Two weeks ago I traded my Vespa P200E -80 for a BMW K100RS from 1985. A friend of mine couldnīt use the BMW because of the weight, and the Vespa was much better for him. I know that the Vespa is worth more than the RS, but I didnīt care much about that.

The RS had a few issues. The speedometer, neutral light and gear display didn't work. The rear brake worked bad despite new parts. It ran a little rough.
I fixed the rear brake by bleeding it. Repaired the instrumentation by properly attaching the connectors on the back of the instrumentation.
The good parts about the RS: very complete, and not altered at all. New tires. New rubber parts in the fuel injection. New seals in the fork. Ohlins shock absorber.

I then drove the RS for a few days. Got used to the (for me) unusual indicator switches. Learned how to use the motor characteristics best. In the beginning struggeling then driving really slow. Liked it much more than expected.

Then it started to leak bad from the final drive. Took it apart, and found out that the reason for the leak was huge amount of dirt between final drive and brake disc. The axle seal was almost gone because of dirt being pressed against it.

Before ordering the seals I checked the fuel injection. The LE-Jetronic isnīt rocket science, and I soon found out the faults:
The air filter box clamps was missing, resulting in leaks.
The hose from air box to plenum chamber was loose at the air box, missing the clamp.
The z-hose from engine to fuel rail was cracked.
The hose from pressure regulator to throttlebody 4 was pinched.
All the injector connections was slightly corroded.

Otherwise it was OK... =D

I fixed the injection faults, patched the z-hose, and then the engine began to run really good.
I ordered the final drive seals and a new z-hose, and is now eagerly waiting for them.

I work in the leisure boat industry as a mechanic, and the summer is no time for vacation. In september I might get some time off, and itīs when still warm enough to take a drive to Italy. I have been to Stelvio every year since 2011, and this time I think the RS will be a nice choice of ride.

I am 51 years of age, a family man with wife and a grown up daughter,  have been riding motorcycles since 1982 and have an AD/HD diagnosis. Fast vehicles and AD/HD isn't the best combination, but with rising age I have become a little more careful than before. I live at the atlantic ocean on the west coast of Sweden. The quite mild winters makes motorcycling possible most of the year, but I don't drive when -10C or colder. Maybe the good fairing on the RS will make it possible to drive when even colder?

Welcome! It seems like you've got a clear understanding of how to proceed. Please post some photos of the Vespa replacement.

Welcome!  I always thought it would be kind of fun to tour on a scooter, but you should no doubt have a better go at it with your new brick.  Enjoy!
