ALWAYS Carry a Spare
« on: August 18, 2017, 08:34:28 PM »
I was reminded last night why I followed the advice from those on this list to always carry a spare clutch cable.

Full disclosure here...  I did not clean and lube the barrel end of the cable in the lever as I know it requires.  :nono

While riding home from a friend's home I accelerated as I entered the interstate and my clutch cable broke when shifting from second to third.  Quickly contemplating my situation and distance from home (12 miles) I decided to speed shift to interstate speed and take my exit knowing that there was a well-lighted Shell convenience store just off the ramp.  Using my spare cable and barrel which was MIA I quickly set about the task of guiding the new cable after taping it to the old.  No duct tape so I improvised using some first aid tape from the kit and was back on the road in less than an hour.

This is the second time for me.  First was after a 4500 mile trip to the midwest and it happened less than 15 miles from the house on the way home.

Now another order to BeemerBoneyard for a spare.

I've got a mate that goes off at me for all the spares that I carry and have never used. He however has had to use the following of mine, clutch cable, WD40, cable ties, insulation tape, fuel hose. I am still on my original 25 year old clutch cable, which against advice I lube with a PTFE lube called Tri Flow. It will not effect the Teflon cable liner as some lubricants can do, it's available from bicycle shops.
