K100 Ebay Aluminum Radiator
« on: August 05, 2017, 11:11:39 AM »
Hello all, this is my first post here regarding my first K bike which I recently bought. Bike is an 87 K100RS and soon after purchasing I discovered the radiator has a hole and pours coolant out. Checked at the local BMW dealer and they want $800 for a radiator. Absurd. So I was wondering if anyone had expierience with or knows the quality of the aluminum units available on ebay. I would post a link but it comes out very long. Any other options/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

if i had a leak in my radiator i would go to a local radiator repair facility and have them solder it up...

I did consider having it repaired but unfortunately there are no local shops that do these types of repair. I may try repairing it myself. If im not mistaken this is an aluminum core radiator correct? What type of solder would I need to use?

You can get aluminium solder. However I have found it is very hard to use too little heat and it just blobs, too much heat and it will collapse. I tried various gases propane, MAP, oxy acetylene. Oxy acetylene worked best however I would find an old stuffed aluminium core from a car, motorcycle wrecker, or scrap dealer and practice and practice. Only when you can do it successfully and consistently would I the tackle the Brick radiator. Critical to getting a good repair, is the area you are cleaning must be extremely clean. I used a new stainless steel brush and weak acid. Googling You Tube for aluminium solder techniques will help. If you don't have any radiator repair places a good welding shop might be able to help you.
Good Luck Regards Martin.

I ran my VIN and it comes up as September of 86. So you are correct. And that does look like a nice one. That may be the one.

There has to be at least a dozen radiators on eBay for your bike for about 50 bucks.  An hour or so to clean the bugs out of the fins and flush the core and you'll have it as good as new.  You don't need to spend a lot to get a good one.

Yeah I think I'd just get another used one. K radiators don't seem to typically be an issue. And the hoses seem to be made out of Unobtania since me and others report that they still look and feel like new even if original

Well thanks for all the replies everyone, ended up going with a pretty nice looking used unit from ebay. Hopefully I dont have many other bugs to work out as I plan to turn this into a cafe style bike over the winter.
