Folding Key

Man, those folding keys ain't cheap!  So, what's the difference between a Code Key (part # 51251453645) at $47.25 and the Blank Key (part # 51251453659) at $28.15.  I've bought blank keys in the past and had them cut at a local keysmith.  Now Aprilia Shiver keys, those are expensive at $53.25, but they have a transponder chip at least.

You need to hunt around sometimes this is just an example try your local  BMW.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-BMW-K100-R80-K75-Motorrad-R-K-Bike-Plastic-Folding-Blank-Key-51251453659-/201929227758? I can get standard flat keys from the local shopping centre for under $10.00 Cut.

Your Aprilla key may have a chip, but it doesn't have those magical three letters that elevate the price through the ceiling.

i just had two k75 flat keys made for about $4.

ILCO F1000 is the blank.  shape and pattern work, but you need to grind the shoulders to make it longer.  I have done this more than once.

I've been able to get new folding and flat keys cut at both Bob's BMW and Morton's at a very fair price.  Check the nearby dealers.

So why does the key fold? Seems to serve no purpose that I can see. Mine will fit without folding much to my buddy's amazement and annoyance. Hard to manipulate in the folded position. Especially with gloves on.

The key folds from the direction of travel to let other keys attached to it rest on your fork head without rumbling about when travelling at speed on bumpy roads ;-)

Oh. Good thinking. I thought maybe it was to reduce aerodynamic drag during high speed operation.

At hi speed you can not do without it, turbulens and drag will appear, with all the risks involved, and also of course if you handle the driving risks, you will get redused milage and irritating stops to refill fuel ;-)

My folding key also has an arrow head on it so you know when you have the ignition on or off. It stops confusing the non tech types.  :neener:

Laitch if you paint the arrow on the folding key with luminous paint, it will function in the dark. Very useful for night riding non tech types. :dunno
