Title: swap to chain drive
Post by: Roland on May 21, 2017, 11:31:22 PM
Has anyone seen or heard of anyone swapping a k100 over to a chain drive? just wondering if it would be an option or not. I have quite a bit of knowledge but don't want to spend the time or money if it is impossible to do. Thank you and cheers

One question is why would you want to do it.  :dunno

Transmission output shaft in wrong orientation.

But I am interested in the concept.

Heres the thing. There are draw backs from a shadt drive like subtraction of power and weight of final drive. Not to mention the fact that te shadt teeth can wear out. I also wanted to move the shock from the current place to where the battery is currently. A chain drive would also allow me to change the gear ratio for extra torque and stop the jacking effect of the rear end. I would also like to put maybe an inch shorter wheelbase on the bike.

I was thinking i could potentially put a 90 degree gearbox on the place where the u joint is now. That would make the output the correct direction.

I have already swpoed the fuel injection out for a carb and am making a new gas tank so why stop there.

Well if it helps as with most things it has already been done, probably about ten years ago. I can't remember who or where if I find it I'll post it, good luck.
Regards Martin.

Just type in BMW chain drive conversion.

Swapping to a K1100RS rear end is very easy and eliminates the jacking effect and the problem with the teeth wearing out since the paralever design is a bit better. Might be something to look into?

That being said, as far as a chain conversion is concerned I'm definitely interested in the "can it be done" factor. It's actually not even the craziest idea I've heard on here. But you're also not trying to spend a lot of money and these things usually take quite a bit of both of those. I could be wrong though!

It's an engineering challenge, that's for certain, and it's the perfect pastime for those who would rather work on a bike than ride it.  :2thumbup:

You could mount the engine transversely then take the gearbox from a Harley.  Seems there was some jap bike that had a longitudinal engine with a GB that had a 90 degree output for a chain or belt drive.  Maybe you could find one of those and adapt it to a K. I could be imagining that I saw one except I remember thinking "why did they do that?"

or....you could just buy a different bike that was made with chain drive in the first place.   the shaft drive is part of it being a "K"....as was the fuel injection and tank.....

the cost of converting to chain is probably more than the cost of two new driveshafts and a diff rebuild.  which would last 200k miles...

Kaw went the opposite route with the Concours, bending the drivetrain 90 degrees to use a shaft drive on a transversely mounted engine.  A chain would have been much easier and direct but they were competing with BMW sport tourers and they decided a shaft would trump a chain

Well. I already got rid of the fuel injection and it rins well. The tank is deffinitely changin because it does not fit the bike. As for the deice shadt i will probably just put a shock there the battery was to hide it. It will look better and may function better.

My $.02, anything can be done, but sometimes times the juice is just not worth the squeeze. Shaft drive, though heavy and not as efficient as chain drive, is one of the things I really like about kbikes. I have a chain drive ducati that I put a lot of miles on(roughly 2k/month) and chain maintenance sucks! This is compounded by my lack of a garage, but simply from a maintenance perspective I'm a big fan of shaft drive. Also, Why did you replace the fuel injection with carbs?

Shaft drive is better when the shaft design is correct.  Grease cup in shaft, longer splines in drive shaft and bevel for example.

The fuel pump was broken and so were the injectors so we replaced it with a single sidedraft weber. We also wanted to make it more of a 70s bike so that meant no fuel injection.
