Hello everyone,
I had taken the right lower (and other stuff) off of my K1100lt to check the breather related hoses out for cracks and rot. Several need replacing.
Anyway I put the fairing back on as I didn't yet have all of them.
The last thing that needed to be replaced was the battery negative terminal. I attempted to replace it when all sorts of smoke and sparks stopped me dead in my tracks. It was like when you jump a battery and put the cables on the wrong terminals.
I put a test light onto the NEGATIVE terminal and other end to frame (ground) and the light lit up? WTF?? so there is my problem and it is weird.
I don't dare to leave it on there for fear of burning up my electrical system.
Anyone have any suggestions as to where to look/ what to do? :yow

Your Brother was on the Swedish BMW forum earlier this week, same bike, one year older.
Mixed up the battery cables, and connected one to the wrong terminal.
It was the negative cable which normaly is connected to the Motronic housing that was connected
to the positive battery terminal.
-
I only took off the negative cable. They are clearly marked.

Sounds like you have disturbed some other wires or doodads while you was digging under the Tupperware.
A unswitched wire (or similar) is touching ground.......is the camping cutlery counted for after use?
-
Are there some additional add on wires connected to the battery posts that could have gotten back on wrong?

If it were my bike, I'd slowly start removing everything back to where reassembly began, watching for something out of place.

Thanks Ya'all
"If it were my bike, I'd slowly start removing everything back to where reassembly began, watching for something out of place.".....................that's exactly what I am going to do. And test it every step of the way with the test light.... ...good ol' test light.

I took everything off (again) only to discover that my extra tall Odyssey battery's pos lead was touching the metal thing on top of it. Once I shoved some pipe insulation between the two, all was (is) well again. :2thumbup:
Tomorrow its off to the dealer to buy vacuum hoses and non one time use hose clamps and for the rubber fork gaiter looking things that go from the air cleaner to the throttle bodies.
Over $5.00 each x4 for the fcking clamps! :bmwsmile :cowpoop:

Thanks for the update, beemrdon!

Go to the motorcycle wrecker for those hose clamps; they are used on Japanese bikes as well. I got 8 pieces for $10

Thanks for that...
