Thank you for this forum, I know it will be a great resource for me!
I had been looking at the BMW k100 café racers for over a year, and finally decided to give it a try. This is my first build, and I have a budget. My plan is to work it and rebuild it as I drive it.
First I had to find a bike... after some time I found a friend of mine selling a 1985 k100 for very cheap. I was able to get it for about 1400 (with back registration that was due). The bike had been sitting for 12 years so I wasn't sure if I was getting a Pandora's box.
With very minimal effort I was able to get the bike running 100%
- New battery
-spark plugs
-fluids
- gas
- clean up rotors and change brake pads
---- System checks and everything was working 100% - What a great machine!
The only issue I had was when I changed the brake pads - the right front caliper was sucking air and wasn't allowing me to blled the brake system. Eager to test drive the bike, I removed the brake line from the caliper - moved the bleeder to the line, bled the brakes - and test drove at low speeds with only one brake in the front (no issues but not recommended)
Plan moving forward
- replace headlight
- remount/lower stock gauges - will eventually replace with smaller/better gauges but that's a project in its self and I want this bike on the road
- purchased exhaust from cafe4racer ( shipped)
- New front caliper
- new seat - café style
- rear sets
- paint job
- relocate ECU
- powder coat forks and add boots
- powder coat rims

My goal is to have a total build for under $3,000.
Won't be the prettiest for awhile, but over time, little mods and cosmetic improvements will make a difference.
Once I get it street ready - I will post the "completed for now" pictures.

neat trick with the leaky caliper :clap: many bikes only have one brake, i doubt it would be an issue in normal riding. Looks like you have aftermarket EBC rotors, nice, those are a $400 item, probably $800 if you get the jen-you-whine BMW articles :yow

The fuel tank cap is reversed. It should hinge from the rear. There is a line that drains water that accumulates around the cap. That line exits from the rear underside of the cap. When the cap is reversed like yours, water can infiltrate the tank then mix with the fuel if some accommodation hasn't been made to prevent that.

The rotors needed a lot of soft steel wool and love. But I think I got them up to speed.
Thank you for the details on the gas cap! I am planning on replacing it eventually (probably sooner now).

You might want to put up your unused body panels for sale. Traditionalist inmates love cheap body panels and any other unused parts it will help finance your project. :clap:

It can be done. I have $3k in mine. Paid $1500 sold about $350 worth of stuff, and invested another $1700 or so. My seat cost $400 which was a huge chunk. The Acewell and fuel pump kit was another expense. Making rear set brackets, building my own exhaust, and doing the paint work and wiring saved big.

Update on my poor mans build - I got lucky and this old girl purrs, starts like a rocket and hasn't given me any trouble. The guy who owned it before me did the scheduled maintenance to the T and it shows - its still pretty ugly, but its perfect!

Handle bars replaced with clip ons - (7/8 plus a lot of grinding to make the stock controls fit)
Refurbished brake system - rotors refinished, rebuild caliper, new pads
new headlight
mirrors
new exhaust (ask for source)
blinkers
painted rims
fork oil
air intake poor mans modification (see picture - 2" sink connection hose from my local Home Depot fits better then the stock snorkel
Items to complete
New seat is on its way
Cut frame to match
new rear controls (or just cut the stock for now)
new speedo and electronics
Paint tank and seat - (in my garage)

Received my seat today.
I have worked out the electrical issues with the tail lights and blinkers, time for some fabrication and creativity.
If you want the vendor name for the seat, just shoot me a message. Fiberglass shell that follows the stock frame lines nicely. Also, came with a high quality pad.

I see a seat mounting frame in here someplace!
I think this piece of metal will work well when bolted to the underside of the fiberglass seat. Then run two frame rails made of 1" boxed metal the length of the frame. bolted all together and should be clean with minimal welding

What strap-ons did you use? Any more detail on making the stock controls work?

Same seat. I will take some pictures of how I mounted it when I get it all buttoned up. The color code is a fiat color - 208/B/RBI azzurro Italian met BC

I actually messaged him before I bought off eBay about whether the seat is "ready to sit on" or needs a frame. He sent me pics of some "L" shaped rails he uses in the middle open space between the frame rails. I asked him if he could include them and he said yes. I had to pay a little more shipping but saves me some work. See attached photos.

Just as a tip, I'd maybe add some sort of rubber to the bottom of those where the seat touches the rails. It'll help with the flex along with taking some vibrations out.

Thanks, I think I'll probably weld/bolt a thicker piece of sheet steel on top for a flat surface, then put a rubber pad between it and the seat.
