Title: Front Wheel Bearings
Post by: Snowman on February 25, 2017, 10:01:41 PM
Anything different changing the front wheel bearings on a K11 compared to other bikes?. I have done many other Jap bikes but i heard one of the bearings on a K11 is different.

You can see the difference between the front wheel bearings on the wheel diagram and parts list of this fiche (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51711&rnd=12082016).

One is a normal bearing for $27, but the other they are calling an 'angular bearing' for a whopping $67! Anyone put new bearings in your front wheel?

I did and I got the bearings much cheaper.

They arrived fast and fit perfectly.  You may be able to find a better option in the US as well

I got mine from http://www.qualitybearingsonline.com/ (http://www.qualitybearingsonline.com/)

I recently put a new front tire on, and in the process, I thought I would lube up my front wheel bearings. I've never had any issues, but as with everything else I've ever owned,  I like to lube / repack bearings any chance I can get.

I found that the bearings were sealed and unserviceable. Am I wrong here? I couldn't really see any way for getting grease at the guts of the bearing. I just spread a dollop of bearing grease over the axle and figured that is all I can do?  :dunno

Sometimes depending on bearing design the seal can be removed and replaced.  In others not possible.

The ones I put in were sealed - still it can't hurt to smear some grease on top

Not necessarily worth repacking. You can introduce grease incompatibility or dirt, or compromise the seal and allow dirt or moisture in. The bearings are fairly cheap as well, and easy to replace. Probably best just spending the 15 bucks on a new set of bearings ever 5-10 years.

Good call.

They seem to be fine for now, but I've ordered a set for when they start to yell back at me.

My S model is starting to feel rough in the front wheel and I am beginning to think I have a wheel bearing job in the not so distant future.  I see a set of two bearings from the dealer is going to hit me for $163 and change.  My local bearing supply house prices are pretty close to what BMW gets.

Any sources for bearings of similar quality for a lower price?

they are  in the UK but even with shipping were hugely cheaper - the smaller front bearing was $27 at MaxBMW and I paid $5 for it.

For both I paid a total of $62 including shipping to Miami - MaxBMW wanted $94 before shipping.

I am sure there is a US option out there somewhere as well

What is going to be useful is the exact description of the bearings

3205-B-2HRS-TVH - FAG Double Row Angular Contact - 25x52x20.6mm

and

6005 2RSR FAG Deep Groove Bearing - 25 x 47 x 12mm

A quick bit of googling turned up these guys

https://bearingsdirect.com/ (https://bearingsdirect.com/)

I didn't find the exact bearing but a call to there toll free number should sort that out

I spent 5 years as a press tech, another 22 years as a shop owner and always sourced bearings locally. There should be something listed under belt&bearing or power transmission in the yeller pages. BTW, it's best to know exactly what you want before you cross their threshold.

Pull your old ones and take them to the local bearing warehouse. They will match them up for 1/2 the price of Bavaria.

I often just buy them on fleabay. Find some old stock FAG or SKF bearings that match.
