Title: A short introduction
Post by: mg1 on December 31, 2016, 01:28:25 AM
Hi everyone
This is my first post.  I've recently picked up a 1993 K1100RS and joined up here to re-acquaint myself with all things brick, having had K bikes in the past but not for many years.  I'm really pleased to have found this one, it's very well looked after and had less than 70,000km on the clock when I picked it up.

For the sake of those who may be in the Northern Hemisphere and possibly feeling the onset of cabin fever, I took the attached photo today on a little day ride around the district.  You could call it a hot German bike on a hot Australian summer's day, parked in front of a cool old pub.  For rehydration purposes of course.

All the best for the coming year
Martin, in the sunny Riverina

Welcome!  And Happy New Year!  Here's hoping it doesn't get to confusing with two Oz Martins around the asylum.

Welcome ...

Northern Hemi:Yup. Cabin fever:Nope. Although I was the only 1 who rode to New Years Day breakfast.

Greetings and welcome from up north.  Nice K, seems like a bunch of them are on the other side of the equator.  Rode yesterday and today but the brick is hibernating, the Russian hack gets the winter kilometers.   :riding:

Back in my misspent youth we referred to pub bikes as TT racers(tavern to tavern).  Coffee was for hangovers.

Nice bike
Enjoy the touring around and researching the different beers to be had.
Pity about the heat given off - especially in summer. There are a few tips on this forum about lessening the testicle stir fry ... namely manual switch for fan and a reflective blanket between motor and fuel tank (see "Johnny Blanket)
How did you get hold of the bike? Private / ebay / gumtree??

Good riding

Thank you for your kind welcome.  I decided I wanted a K1100RS then went looking for one, but they proved to be thin on the ground in this part of the world.  I found mine on Gumtree in South Australia, which meant a bit of a trek to look at it but it felt great as soon as I test-rode it so I rode it home on the spot.  Nothing like a quick 1100km ride home to get to know your new bike.

It had been owned by an older bloke, an engineer no less, who couldn't manage the bike anymore.  It came with owners manual, BMW service manual, original tools, tyre repair kit and first aid kit.  So nice to find an original unmolested bike!  I have a few jobs in mind as funds allow, some new colour-matched tragkorbs, an upgraded rear shock, and a little paintwork around the bellypan due to gravel spray over the years, but it's perfectly rideable right now -amazingly so for a bike nearly 25 years old - so for now I've just popped fresh fluids in and ridden it.

As for heat, yes it is very noticeable in towns but on the highway it's ok.  Not nearly so objectionable as a K100RT I owned about 6 bikes back, which would boil the fuel in the tank on a hot day, and my legs along with it.  I may well tackle the Johnny Blanket in due course, but I'm coping as it is.  In winter it may even be a benefit!   For now, I'm concentrating my efforts on fixing the speedo, which seems to have a mind of its own on the highway.  I've cleaned the sender in the final drive but it's made no difference. I cruise at 4-4.5K rpm on the highway but that could be anything from 90-140km/h depending on what the speedo feels like telling me at that moment.  Not sure the HWP would accept that as an excuse so I'll have to get to the bottom of it.  All ideas gratefully accepted.

regards to all

OZ Martin #2  I used to have  a vaporization problem in heavy traffic with low fuel level on hot days. Put up with it for 18 years by just filling up the tank when venturing into heavy traffic. After pondering the problem I didn't want to rush into it, I bought this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TradeSelect-ThermalBrane-4-Foil-Shed-house-insulation-1500mm-wide-per-lineal-mtr-/331409172188?hash=item4d2986a6dc:g:gp8AAOSwg3FUhU-T   I picked it up as they are local, fitted it and have reduced the problem a lot.  I used spray on contact glue and aluminium tape at the seams. When I turned up the lady gave me the end of the roll 2.5 metre for the same price as a metre it took a bit of creative solutions to get it on the Brick 1.5 metre by 450mm roll.
