So in my seemingly endless quest to get my headlight back, I received a starter rebuild kit in the mail today ...yaaaaay!
So my auto style bearing puller is too large of jaw.. Anybody advise on a bearing puller?
I don't own a seal puller, but what works best? I've used the ones that just pry it up.. Advice?
upon disassembly and comparison with the service manual I note there as supposed to be three thrust washers on the back bushing side of the starter thin/thick/thin I read......missing parts...hmmm..wonder if that might contribute to my ground issues? Im on the hunt for replacements.

Steering wheel puller? Cheap, and easy to obtain. Sometimes you gotta mix & match when it comes to tools like this.

Yes thanks I'd seen this and several similar on YouTube though none address the bearing, oil seal and bushing replacements included in my kit. I think I know what tools to buy borrow now. Cheers.

Can you post a diagram indicating the "missing parts/thrust washers"? Was there play in the shaft causing you to replace the bearings? I've looked at both the Haynes and the BMW manuals but can't find the reference to the three thrust washers. All I've found is "shim as necessary."
Which tutorial are you using?

Steering wheel puller? Cheap, and easy to obtain. Sometimes you gotta mix & match when it comes to tools like this.
So I shopped a variety of local stores looked at a steering wheel puller et al but didn't find anything with a jaw thin enough to fit in the narrow gap between the bearing ( rollers looking pretty beat btw) and the delicate armature. I may have to fabricate some sort of plate fork to run behind the bearing and pull it up.
for the bushing I plan to pick up a slide hammer at HF. Ideas? May be 43 in cheeseland Sunday...hope for a brief ride despite the wet forecast. Merry Christmas all. Ive been working Santa for Funduro I've spotted on Craigslist. Cheers.

+1 Laitch they are shims used to reduce the end float, shim as necessary. Some may have one, some may have more varying in thickness to take up the individual starter motor shafts end float. Assemble and check the end float and shim accordingly.
