Hi Guys, I have a K1100LT which I'm doing a few mods on, (specifically building a streamlined body kit for it).
I don't want to run the standard instruments, but when I disconnect them, the bike won't start, I guess because the ECU doesn't know the gearbox is in neutral.
Can anyone advise a work-around for this one?

Pull in the clutch when trying to start the motorcycle.

Thanks Robert. I tried that; still no go. Any other suggestions? It starts fine with the instrument pod plugged in.

thanks guys, I found what I need there, a "start in neutral" simulator using three relays! Excellent.

I'd suggest you check the clutch switch as well. It will save you grief down the road if/when the gear position switch starts acting up. :2thumbup:

Thanks again guys. Side stand is missing, but I'll check what the switch and wiring is up to. And if it's supposed to start with the clutch in, I'll have a look into that as well. kind rgds, Malcolm

Hi bilgolabeach, You didn't provide an answer to Laitch's earlier question - does it turn over but not start, or does it not even turn over. The side stand switch will completely prevent the engine from turning over if it is malfunctioning (eg. open circuit even though the sidestand is up). Check that component as was suggested. I'm kind of doubting that the sidestand switch is failing because your symptoms indicate that the bike starts and runs with the OEM dash connected. If the sidestand switch was acting up, the same non-start symptoms would be exhibited with the dash connected or not.
If the sidestand switch is operating as required, then pulling in the clutch should activate the Start Enable circuit. If the bike does not turn over with the dash disconnected and the clutch pulled in, then the failure is in the clutch switch. Adding the relay circuit will just mask this problem.

This may not be pertinent but anyway,... my k1100 wouldn't start even with the side stand up 2 months ago while I was on the road far from home...I got some wd40 and sprayed the little ball bearing that a "wand" (attached to the side stand) hits when the stand goes up. It pushes in on the spring loaded ball which, I presume, actuates the connection. (If you don't have a lift, you have to get on the ground on the left side to see what I am referring to.)
It hasn't given me any problems since.
Sorry I don't know the tech terms for these components.
As an aside, my bike will not start with the side stand down - period. It doesn't matter if it is in neutral or the clutch lever is actuated...or both at once.

Thanks again guys. To answer Laitch's earlier question, the starter motor will not work without the standard dash plugged in, whether it is in gear or neutral, clutch pulled in or not. I'll investigate the clutch switch. Thanks for your help with this. I know that some later BMWs won't start in gear, clutch pulled in or otherwise. kind rgds, Malcolm

hi guys. Just out of interest, my bike was completely gutless when I bought it. No grunt and wouldn't rev over 4000. I replaced the fuel filter, and now it's a rocket. Possibly the best $12.50 I've ever spent.

Geez, how old was that filter??
