Title: 1986 K100 some kind of project
Post by: JPaganel on October 08, 2016, 05:54:45 PM: I decided to start a log of my project in a more appropriate place.

So, here is a 1986 K100.

I don't have a specific vision for it, just want to clean it up a bit.

Just look at that awesome green overspray on the motor. Also tons of dirt under the fairing I didn't wash off.

I am amazed how heavy the fairing bits are. Also at how poorly attached they were. So many missing screws...

I ordered a cheap universal headlight, but that will be a temporary measure.

No cafe silliness here.

The main plug under the seat can become disconnected. Push it in firmly. Check that the latch on the right side of the plug—as you face it—has fastened.

Tried that. No dice.

Is there a main fuse that isn't on the fuse panel? The only thing that I have powered up is the dash clock. No lights, no other signs of life.

Apparently, it was a couple of teeth off, and there was so much rust and dirt under the handle, I had a hard time pulling it off.

Cleaned it off with some penetrating oil and greased it up with some grease. Now it actually feels like a throttle instead of an old outhouse latch.

The design of the throttle mechanism is just something else. Gears, chain... Truly, Germans have never used one part where three can be used... :euro

Check the ignition switch, and its connector (under the tank).

There sure are a lot of connectors that don't plug into anywhere. These bikes must have a bunch of optional equipment, or the PO has removed some stuff.

All of the connectors seem tight, and wiggling them does nothing. Doesn't seem like a loose connection under tank.

Total lack of power really seems like a blown breaker or main fuse. Battery is a little loose in the bracket, conceivably could have shorted. On my other bikes that would pop a 30A fuse, but I don't see one like that here.

Stopped by the auto parts store to look at the electrical section. The thinnest wires they have is 18 gauge, and the stuff in the tank harness is thinner than that. 20 or 22, maybe? I'm going to dig out the caliper and just measure it.
