Put this originally in the buy & sell threads, but thought that actually this was more of the correct forum. Let me know otherwise
Well, once I get one thing repaired, another problem rears its ugly head. So I am trying to locate a part in the locking gas cap on my 1991 K100RS. The round cam that moves the sliding latch. I replaced the key lock since I broke it when removing it so I could unlock my cap. The cam is plastic and appears to have the two holes stripped that the lock itself engages. Am I going to have to find the entire locking gas cap assembly do you think? Are there any BMW used parts dealers I could contact, US or international? I was also trying to think of a way to drop in some kind of putty that would dry hard after I pushed the key lock into it order to make an impression with the dowels. Any information would be greatly appreciated.:dunno

Single parts isn't available, only gaskets....but I think that is history also.

Seeing you know all about gas caps after that tutorial, how about opening one without the key (and possibly siezed inside). It is coming off a parts bike (84 K100RS) and am keen to get at the fuel pump etc. The bike does not have a helmet key
So far: taken it to the locksmith who got the magic keys out, filled the barrel with spray (Inox), definately tried it anti-clockwise, pushed down on it, pleaded with it, tried mate's 12 or so other keys. Defeated.
Am thinking keep filling barrel with penetrating fluid. Drill out the steering lock?
Has someone got a magic method they've discovered?

Was about to follow the instructions to open cap (ie 5-8mm hole 23 mm in)... and I was having my doubts - so I took off the cap from my other K that I did have the key for and dismantled the cap.
And it was all so logical with hindsight.
In first pic, the drilled hole can be see immediately below the lock on RHS. The screwdriver obviously acts on the back of the locking slide from behind the lock (hinge side).
Opened first go.
And what treasures awaited: the fuel pump rubber mount had perished into a gooey mesh, the fuel pump was rattling around in the tank, the mesh is still under the mount. Fuel lines were fine and tank was quite clean (small leak in usual spot 3/4 along the front LHS bottom).
Then of course it was dinner time and (having not used the rubber gloves) and had to apologize to my wife for looking like I'd violated the tar baby out of briar rabbit

I sympathise looks as bad as my mates I had a S*** of a time getting it of my hands. I couldn't get it out from under my nails and ended up having to cut them down to the flesh.

Just noticed all the sawdust on the bench under the fuel cap.
There I was minding my own business and my 12 year old son appears and says (to cut a long story short) he wants to make some zombie defensive weapon. 1 hour later...circular saw blade (ever tried to drill through one?) mounted into sledge hammer handle, rags for effect and to soak in fuel and set alight... happy boy and dad can get back to whatever the f@#k he does in the shed.
It's a multi-purpose establishment!
