Title: Neutral indicator light - 3-relays or 4?
Post by: nine on September 15, 2016, 01:50:52 AM
As I'm trying to figure out installation of my aftermarket instrumentation (Trail Tech Vapor), I've come across two different circuit diagrams being recommended for having a functioning neutral light without the original cluster.

One is this diagram, in which three relays and a 12V diode are used:

And then there's this one, which appears almost identical but a fourth relay is inserted:

My knowledge of electrics is limited more or less to making sure the battery is charged and plugs are plugged, so I'm not sure what the difference is here, and which one would be better.

If it makes any difference, the neutral light with the Vapor installation is essentially an independently wired LED, not part of the digital speedometer unit. I'm also not concerned about emulating the start-in-neutral-with-clutch-out functionality of the OEM dashboard, but from what I gather that is a byproduct of making a neutral indicator work.

The fourth relay is only to turn on the neutral light in a cluster by providing a switched ground. Depending on your new indicator's needs you will put a ground or 12 v to it.
