Title: Anyone travelling from huntsville area towards baltimore or points north?
Post by: allisonmo2 on August 27, 2016, 06:31:19 PM
I'm looking at a bike in the Huntsville area and just simply wondering if anybody may be planning any trips northbound in the near future. I posted on uship already and it seems like the going rate is about $1 per mile. I am right about 700 miles away. Does anybody know of a better shipping Company?

Want me to go look at it for you, or have you already decided and just need it delivered?

It is about as exact to what i was looking for as if i built it myself. But 700 bucks to deliver is causing me heartache.  I had a truck shipped feom a copart auction in Illinois for 300 bucks. Can't figure out why this seems so expensive.

You are a two-zone transport, and the lowest I've seen is summer specials around $500. Transport costs make otherwise desirable K-Bikes unattractive.

If it runs and you trust the seller enough, do the fly-n-ride. That's a two day ride over 700 miles. I've done the bus-n-ride for about 200 miles. No problem. Lots of folks here have gotten their bricks that way.

Holy crap batman! Airfare, cheapest, 420 bucks plus fees and such. 455 total. Even a bus or train is almost 250 and they are both a 27 hour adventure. Pass.

Drive down on Saturday with your plate, and ride back on Sunday.   Two 10 hour days on the slab, but doable.

700 miles on a brick is just a long trip around the block.

Would the seller be willing to ride the bike a couple hundred miles north?  If he can do 200 miles it cuts your drive/ride time by about 3 hours each way to under 8 hours which is very easily doable.  Offer to pay for his gas and buy him dinner.

Look at the rates flying in to Nashville instead.  Boeing is in huntville and they only pay full fares to the airlines, no discounts.

Don't do it,  allisonmo2! Wait until the perfect bike comes to you. It will be kismet.

Rent a pickup truck from Enterprise for a weekend. If that's too expensive, you probably won't like the prices for K-Bike components you'll need to buy as an owner. Buy local so you can check out what you buy before you buy it. Post a picture here of the bike you're lusting for, maybe somebody else will buy it and stop your torment.

I bought my yellow K75S over the internet from Dallas and did a fly and ride.  Was a great trip(2100 miles in 4 days).

If the bike has reasonable mileage(ie.<50-60K), hasn't been stored outdoors for a year or two, and has had the fluids changed recently should easily do the trip.   Unless you have never been on a bike before I would look at it as a great opportunity to quickly bond with your "new" bike.

A great idea to move the process forward.

Dunno. Didn't bother to ask. Not a big fan of the Ferrari red. That would probably change soon enough. I'm more of a blue or silver kinda guy.

Try a couple of car hire companies, sometimes they will give you a reduced rate if they need to return a car that has been hired for a one way trip.
Try truck companies they might give you a lift, offer to pay for food and drinks. Go to a truck stop and find out who does regular runs between where you are and where you want to go. Explain what you are doing I have found if you are pleasant and polite it opens lots of doors. Trucks sometimes come back empty ( called back loads in OZ) and you might get one at a reduced rate.
Regards Martin.

Now Martin, I understand things are different in the Land of OZ, but up here in Amureeko, hanging around truck stops chatting up drivers is a good way to get arrested as a Lot Lizard, or beat up!
As for the "shadow" on the fairing, looks like a Tail of The Dragon decal, which I would promptly take a heat gun to if it was my bike. It's the motorcycle equivalent  of a bumper sticker for Branson, Mo., home of the finest geriatric music acts....."Tie a yellow ribbon 'round my arthritic knee...".

You have got no sense of adventure Ace. Your truckies must be an unsociable lot, it used to be a really good way of getting around.

. . . it used to be a really good way of getting around.
That was before the Class A CDL became popular with serial killers.  :giggles

I'd pay the airfare just to ride that bike for two days.  I disagree with Laitch -- if you see the bike you want  you go get it and ride it home. You can rent a Budget compact one-way, one-day for dirt if flying isn't an option.

Carpe diem!

Having said that, if I didn't like the color of a bike I probably wouldn't buy it. Painting a motorcycle is either a huge PITA, a huge expense or both.  BTW that white splotch is a dragon...probably a decal. If you're not a bright-red, dragon type of guy, then this bike's not for you.

I've used shipbikesright. They did from Norfolk, Virginia down here to Austin, Tx for 500 back in march for a K bike.

Type in rental car (motor home) return to base, rental car relocation and see what comes up. In OZ you can get them for a reduced rate or even free.
