Title: Confused, New K100 Owner - Help!
Post by: 313green on July 19, 2016, 08:22:29 PM
Just picked up a nice 85 K100. I've been searching all day for two things: 1.a low seat option and 2. lowering the shocks/front fork - does it make a difference?

Im trying to lower the bike. Im 5'8. Tip toeing it...  Thx for the help.

Get a pair of boots with the thickest soles possible, you can also add lifts, but try the lifts in the boots. With boots and lifts you can gain 2"" in height. You can also drop the front forks through the triple trees by 1/2". You could go more but you may encounter handling quirks and difficulty putting the bike on the centre stand. Same problem with adding a shorter rear shock which can be sourced. You can also get the stock seat shaved by an upholsterer that knows what he is doing. Or finally get a low seat.
Regards Martin.

Complete low seat conversion kits are hard to find. Maybe you should consider selling that and looking for a low seat model.

That sure is a nice looking bike though. I am 5'8" and have never ridden anything but low seaters and I can flatfoot with room to spare. Does anyone know what the actual height difference with stock seats on the standard vs low seat model is?

The difference between them is two inches.  31.9" with a regular seat and 29.9" with a low seat.

A low seat option for your model year is going to be very difficult to find.  It's the early design and later low seat options don't fit the tail piece.

Hard to tell from the photo but you might already have a lowered seat.  Does your seat hinge up or slide off?

Thanks for the responses. It's a hinged seat. The parts sites show three options for my bike, but I'm wondering if they will fit. Here's the picture. They are expensive!!! And will it even fit, and make a difference? THANKS  :2thumbup:

Only one of those is a low seat according to how I interpret that MAX BMW fiche diagram. There's also another type that is unavailable in stock but has a diagram in the fiche. I've attached an image of it. Note the difference in profiles between it and low seat #1 in the diagram you provided. I believe this is the difference rendered by the rear cowl designs that rbm described in his post. You should run your VIN through an online checker in an attempt learn exactly when it was made.
