So, how does one prove another on the web is on the up and up? :dunno2: We are all hiding behind the keyboard at the start. For me, I respond with a PM, and give a personal email. Any better suggestions?

There has been a rash of "For Sale" and "WTB" scams in various forums lately.
Some attempts even include links to fake sites that look like real sites where they'll try to steal your forum login. Then they use your login and impersonate you in the real forum, using your established credibility to scam other forum members through personal messages.
Be careful.

Since this Scammer came to my email directly, not through this forum or forum PM, it had to start at the iBMWr marketplace. I placed the "Wanted" ad in 3 sites, and that is the only one that requires an email to allow posting an ad.

Proving an identity remotely is luck- and honesty-based. I ask them for their residential address or city then search with their name in that location. If there is scant information or odd hits like Darius Brodrick—International Shipper and president of Brodrick Global Enterprises and Benefactionating, I'll pass. As Chaos indicates, trouble with English language composition is a warning. Of course, that would make suspects out of most of us but I use it as a guide anyway.
Appropriate price, uncomplicated communication, open identity, and PayPal transactions have worked for me so far. When any of those elements are missing, I'll pass.

I agree completely !! You are better at searching than I am apparently! Where did you find that Darius connection? Any title THAT long is certainly suspect anyway.
And BTW,.... I have notified the IBMWR marketplace and deleted the ad. Plan to stay away from the wanted section from now on!

That's a fictional product hoisted from the swamp of my mind, KC, but an accurate example of the lengths scammers will go to be impressive without a clear grasp of language. Take a look at this fun site (http://www.419eater.com/html/ethics.htm).

When in doubt Paypal only. I've had Paypal intervene 3 times over 18 years.

You can get a fake phone number, too, but it only works for SMS. Another rule of thumb is if they have no voice, it's a crappy choice.

Reminds me of trying to sell my wife's Chevy Corsica on Craigslist for $800. Was still getting scams where they send a fake check and have the car picked up by a shipper. Do they really want to steal this car?

Terrible world, I was looking for some Kbike parts 2 years ago. Fellow gets a hold of me and wanted one of these payments via a money gram. I asked him where he was located, he gave me a location 30 minutes away. Was a closed business, and when I suggested I come and pay in cash he stopped contacting me. Sheriff detective and I went for a visit. He ran a lot of scams, but no longer. In jail now. I got lucky.

I was feeling uneasy but got lucky when he gave me a location near were I live. Pure luck! What ever happened to honest people?

He told you where to find him? That is one dumb-ass freaking crook.
Once dealt with a scammer trying to rent someone else's house -- I drove an hour to look at it and when it became clear this person was probably, shall we say, actually located in a country east of Poland I sent him a text suggesting he and his crack-whore mother get a real job and quit wasting everyone's time. He became, shall we say, verbally abusive and threatening and for a while there I was looking over my shoulder and listening for Slavic accents. Moral of the story -- leave people's mothers out of it.

You can use Pay Pal, that is escrow. If he scans you you'll still get your money back
