Title: K1100 front fork spacer plate
Post by: peterstephen on May 24, 2016, 01:47:38 PM
I bought a K1100 from an inexperienced enthusiast who had put it together from (I am guessing) a wreck and parts. I had it parked up for a while while going to upgrade my license. During this time I noticed a crack in the clamp for the lower fork retainer. When I dismantled the forks to replace it I found the spacers in the top clamp. I assume there should be spacers in the bottom clamps? if so, are the top and bottom spacers the same item? what thickness should they be? do they need to be replaced if they are taken out? They aren't even shown in the manual that I have

greetings...

welcome to motobrick.con...

if you want to know what parts fits your moto...

1st... getts the last 7 digits of your vin and put in here (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select) to see what your moto really is...

2nd... then pick your moto here (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/PartsFiche.aspx)...

3rd... after you figger out the exact part number put it in here (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select) to see what all motos it fits...

4th... then put your questions in here (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?action=search) and  search it...

5th... make your post... include the part numbers you looked up... include screen prints to demonstrate you doing the minimum...

when you do the minimum your post will stand on its merits... if you choose to not do the minimum... mystic red will have your post locked and pinned up on the wall of shame... and you will  be sanctioned for a time... plenty enough time to figger out how to getts part numbers and screen shots in your next post...

this is the part [SPACER PLATE]; 31 42 2 311 475,

in my manual it isn't even shown

in the guide it only shows it with the top brace
and in the listing a quantity of 2

but given the broken bottom clamp logic would suggest there should be 4, with the other 2 in the bottom clamp?

cheers, am working on the principle, the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked, Pete

I would abandon your sense of logic in this case, Peter. BMW isn't shy about recommending and supplying parts. I see the drawing clearly showing that the part list quantities refer to both upper and lower components. It is possible you've discovered a typographical error. Contact BMW for verification if nobody here affirms your logical conclusion.

'Working on the very similar principle, the only dumb answer is the one that isn't told.....

Looks like the spacers are used to save the clamps from over tightening...(not needed,if you're the sensitive doer upper or the avid instruction manual reader) or,if you arn't, you could cut them in half to make enough for all four clamps...  :dunno2:

I believe they are only on the upper triple-tree brace.

Max bmw parts fiche would also tell you how many, I just ordered some that I may not need.

PM me and I can send them to you.

appreciate the offer but one thing I have learned with spares is as soon as they are gone you need them, probably best to hang on to them and ward off the gremlins, thanks again from the land of Aus [Oz], and thanks to all those who responded, I will press on and attempt to get it back on the road [since it's been laid up the fuel pump has stopped working and front and back brake seals leaking] before anything else goes wrong, Peter

Not to hijack your thread, but can anyone clarify how to re-install the triple trees?

What I mean is the two nuts that tighten the Lower clamp and the upper clamp.

#7 Kinriled Nut: Hand-tighten only ? How loose/tight?

Then insert the 3# Screw and then #4 and tighten. If I tighten #4 will it tighten #7?

Not to hijack your thread . . .
:hehehe You are hijacking it, jjs. You've already got your own mega-thread going. Why not pose the question in it? You have hundreds—maybe even millions—of followers there.
