My water temperature gauge usually reads about half scale when the bike is cold, only goes up from there.
Question: Can this be replaced by a generic VDO gauge or is this instrument proprietary BMW?

I have a VDO in my 1100.

Thanks,
Only problem so far is finding a correct wiring diagram. Most of the ones which come up in a web search don't even show the water-temp gauge in the diagram. I found one for a K1100 which shows the gauge, and the colors agree with what I have in my hand.
I'm looking at the Cockpit 310-934. Just hope it's compatible with the BMW sensor.

The one I put in reads differently than OEM but I just got used to where it was reading and didn't try to find a sensor to get an exact match to OEM. Does that make sense?

Went for a ride today with the new VDO gauge. It registered right in the middle all day. Around 200 degrees F. Might not be dead on, but a good reference.
I heard the fan running in a parking lot at an indication of about 210 degrees. Close enough for rock n roll.
