Still tentative but I'm hoping to:
Friday: take WA 12 to Lewiston, cheap motel Friday night.
Saturday : WA 129 / OR 3 to Joseph. Putt around. Troy, OR? Maxville, OR? Maybe camp.
Sunday: Take the north side of the Columbia river to Voodoo Dougnut in PDX and then I-5 N back home to Olympia.

that was one of those days it took 18 hours to roll 600 miles... the deer and rain were thick from dusk on...
after that ride the mickster put a 500 mile limit or 12 hour limit on our rides... we compromised at 500 miles or 14 hours...

Uneventful departure from Olympia. A little sprinkling rain, lots of clouds, temps in the 50's all the way to Packwood where I stopped for espresso and fuel.
Got cold over white pass so I turned on the heated grips but held off on the heated jacket liner. Not too long before dropping altitude and rising temps on the other side of the Cascades.
Pulled off the WA 12 to checkout the Teapot gas station in Zillah, WA and the bike started bucking at low speed, like I was running out of fuel. I just cleaned the whole fuel system like three weeks ago so clogs were unlikely. Stopped at the local auto parts place and fed the tank a full bottle of Seafoam. Problem went away and hasn't returned.
Was planning to schlep it all the way to the Snake River but Dayton looked inviting and the cool hotel in town had rooms for $100 including a fruit & chocolate basket and breakfast so I decided to stay.

Chief Springs Fire & Iron Brew Pub. Been chatting with the former owner on the back patio and getting beer from the current owner. Mmmmm. It's Taco Night. Two for $3.

After a not-so-good night's sleep in Dayton, WA's cool old hotel I had a bagel and some lame espresso and hit the road at about 8am.
At the gas station in Pomeroy, WA I asked three people if the unmarked road into the Umatilla Forest was WA 128 and nobody knew. WA 128 looks to be a backway scenic shortcut to the WA 129 / OR 3 Rattlesnake. It wasn't on any maps they had either, not did it register on my GPS, and even the tracking map is unclear. I figured I'd ride it anyway, and it was a great 20 miles but then I ran into ice and snow and had to double back to WA 12. No problem.
Stopped at the cafe in Asotin for some brunch and met a chatty older couple on bicycles who kept the delayed, huge croissant with egg & cheese and pastry and better espresso from being boring.
Rode the Rattlesnake to the bottom, then back to the top and back down again. Awesome. If that road were 100 miles from home I'd ride it every sunny day. Didn't stop for ice cream at the bottom since that cheesy egg croissant and pastry was still weighing me down.
Detoured to the west towards Troy which turned out to be a great, empty paved road along the Grande Ronde river with a small section of dirt. Had a Coke in Troy while the hummingbirds sucked from the store's feeder above my head every two minutes. Sounded like bottle rockets whizzing by.
Doubled-back a mile and crossed the river, then dirt switchbacks for a couple of miles, then dirt, then old empty pavement to OR3 headed towards Enterprise. Fueled-up in Enterprise where I forgot their stupid rule where their guy runs the gas machine.
Blasted through Joseph to Wallowa Lake which is still mostly closed for the season, then back to Joseph where I booked a room at a motel built by former, fellow New Englander turned Oscar-winning actor of long ago, Walter Brennan. Veggie calzone dinner at the pizza cafe two blocks away.

100% Yeeeehaw between Pendleton and the Columbia River today, especially around Heppner. Truly a motorcycle destination road.

Great pics, Tim.........thanks for taking time to get the shots. I am too prone to want to get to where I'm going and not stop, get the camera out, and do the ride essay. But in your previous photo journals, you always seem to have a shot of your bike in the middle of the Damon road! Why not on this run?

So those $1.50 tacos on Friday night... probably not the best decision. Or maybe it was the veggie calzone last night? :dunno2:
Off to a chilly start this morning. Breakfast at the local bacon & eggs cafe with a bunch of really old farmers and farmer's wives. Mediocre country roads from Joseph to Pendleton, OR. Filled the tank and bought an Oregon map to decide on a route home. I debated whether to hit the super-slab north to the Columbia River or meander west for a while before heading north. The map wasn't very descriptive but since I wasn't in a hurry and the weather was perfect I opted to meander.
The next 100 miles were a perfect mix of high-altitude twisty switchbacks and empty straightaways free of distractions, deer, police and other vehicles. The road surface was pristine, banked just right, and bone dry. 90mph+ on the straight stretches.
Crossed the Columbia and hung out at Sam Hill's Stonehenge for a while, trying to figure out what the hell those BC'ers were thinking when they put that shit together. I'm not buying the "clock-calendar" or "human sacrifice" guesses.
The stretch along the Columbia to I-5 was congested with weekenders but not too bad. A few bad apples with trailers who refused to pull over and let traffic pass. :nono
