Noticed this unusual tire wear this morning.
Tire is a Shinko 712 front with about 11k miles on it, mostly highway.
That "flaking stripe" wraps around about half of the tire.
Anything to be worried about?

its the inside banding of the tior that keeps the air in there...
that looks like a manufacturing process where the 2 rubber halves are seamed together...
id armour-all it real good and not give it another thought...

Have you gone back to where you purchased the tyre for their opinion. Does it look like it runs into the tyre or across the tyre. It could be a casting fault,If you gently sand one spot is it removable. if the fault runs into the tyre, I would replace it. How much is a new tyre compared to your confidence in what's between you and the road

If that stripe is still there at 24K, ask for a pro-rated refund.

Tim I had a closer look at your picture it looks like you have cracking in the bottom of the treads.
Regards Martin.

As stated above, looks like a casting flaw, seen something similar on my Avons. Disapeared as the miles went by. If it was really serious it would've reared its ugly head somewhere in the 11k allready on it me thinks... I'd ride it, but keep an eye on it off course... If it starts to get worse, or starts to feel funny change it but my thoughts are that just didn't pop up overnight....
