On my K75, on the dash panel and also the left side near the fuses there are small receptacles for plugs but they are too small for things like a radar detector, etc. Is there an adapter that will fit the BMW receptacle in order to use the conventional plug? Also, why are they so small to begin with?

I think you are talking about the Hella outlets. They take a special plug.

They are also known as Merit plugs . You can buy an adaptor that has a merit plug on one end and a conventional socket on the other. You can also buy Merit plugs and convert your items over.

Adapter than can be used in a BMW outlet as well as a standard power outlet ( cigarette lighter ) for use on different bikes.

You can get all sorts of plugs and accessories at your Beamer dealer or a John Deere dealer.

I grew weary of the patch cords and pulled it out and replaced the one on the dash with a USB socket I bought from an ebay seller. Works very well.

My radar detector uses a power cord with a landline phone plug. I had some old wiring and hooked 2 of the wires to the terminals of a new BMW accessory plug. Works fine. Also found out the accessory socket on the dash is hot at all times. If I knew how, I'd wire it to the ignition switch, instead of having to unplug the RD every time I get off the cycle.
4/7 update. Apparently my plug receptacle has been replaced. There are only 2 wires attached to the terminals--both black. Have not tested which is power vs. ground but that is easy to do. The wiring diagram I have points to 4 wires connected to the accessory plugs. Both accessory receptacles are on the same fuse circuit so both are hot with ignition switched off. Typically when I park the cycle I pull the radar detector and lock it up or carry it with me, depending on time/place, etc. I'll just have to remember to unplug the detector when I arrive home .

The thing to do would be to add a switch to the circuit that would interrupt the socket's power. You wouldn't need to involve the ignition switch. If you have room on your dash, you could use a rocker switch there. If you leave it as is, you are bound to come back to a dead battery someday, or a battery with just enough power to fuse your starter relay contacts instead of starting your bike.

Thanks. I bought a rocker switch yesterday and plan to install it sometime this week. I've picked out a spot--just need to remove the dash and bore the hole to mount the switch. I'll leave my wires long enough I can pull them thru the hole to solder wires in place, then mount the switch in the hole.
I really wanted to use the dummy switch cover but alas, could not find a rocker switch that would fit in the slot out of the hundreds of switches I viewed.

The reactivation of this thread http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,3122.0/topicseen.html (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,3122.0/topicseen.html) prompted me to ask if there is a way to convert the dash aux power outlet to switched power from always on power without adding in an additional switch as discussed above? I use my outlet to power a Garmin which unless over ridden would shut off automatically with external power loss. That way if I forgot and left it plugged in it wouldn't run down the K75's battery.

Yes, pull power from a switched circuit on the bike. Try the Green/Black wire on the 5-pin "Connector for Special Equipment" inside the relay box, or try the Grey/White parking light wire connected to Fuse 2. It is switched through the ignition switch. Third alternative is to install an aftermarket fuse panel with an integrated relay to supply power for auxiliary equipment.

RBM, If power to the dash plug is reconnected to the igniton switch will that cause the other accessory plug to be controlled by the ignition switch as well?
