I have  not seen any reference to a workshop manual on  the board  so I hope I am not duplicating.

That manual and others are available on Flyingbrick (http://technik.flyingbrick.de/index.php?title=01_Technische_Literatur).  That is the authoritative site for official BMW OEM manuals, because they have the permissions from BMW AG to post them.

But we don't seem to have the required permissions to enter that site (?)

I saw a Chattering Tachowelle once. I was on the bike next to the road with my emergency flashers turned on and looking into a copse with my Steiners. I've checked it off my life list.

Laitch if you have a chattering Tacho, try looking up the problem in Instruments on this forum. All problems can be overcome on this forum. I tried flashing in an emergency and the Police tried to run me in for exposure. I only got away with it because it was a cold day.
Regards Martin.
