Title: Brake Light...what does this mean?
Post by: Conrad325i on March 10, 2016, 10:02:57 PM
I am currently in the process of getting a 1986 K75C up and going.
My injectors were shit and so I am currently awaiting new ones in the mail.

In the meantime, the rear brake light does not illuminate upon pulling brake lever or foot pedal with key on and kill switch on.

One of the bulbs is good as I tested it with a 9V battery. I remember reading somewhere that the light wouldnt come on under some failure mode or something another that was seemingly unrelated in my mind.

But anywho... This is my first of what I am sure to be many posts.

Thanks for any help.

Try fuse No 1, or if it has been sitting the switches could be sticking, trace the power at the switches, with a test light or a multimeter.
Regards Martin.

yup.  if both don't work, probably fuse/power source.  if one doesn't work, probably the switch for that circuit.

First place I would look is the connector in the tail.  Make sure that all the connections are made and that the terminals are clean.  A shot of Deoxit sure wouldn't hurt.  Make sure you clean the bulb socket as well.

Try a new bulb.  I had a turn signal where the bulb just wouldn't work in there even though it was a good bulb.  Changed the bulb and everything was good.

Spray some WD-40 onto the switches.  The front makes contact when the plunger comes out, and I have seen mine stick in in the "OFF" position, although it was the one on the clutch side.  Rear could be dirty as well, with the dirt preventing motion of the little thingy that works the switch.

Thanks for the replies. BMW forums are always the best.

My right rearturn signal didnt work either but i put some wd in the rear connector and i took the bulb out and put it back in after i tested it and that fixed it. No more hyper blink lol. But it didnt fix the tail light.

Ill goto checking the switches today.

Im also going to do johnnys three electo-hacks with some contact cleaner.... Wish my injectors were here...
If they were though, I probably wouldnt be taking all this time for this other secondary stuff so i guess its for he best (not that the tail light function isnt imperative)

The brake light should come on when both the front and rear brake are on, correct? Because neither makes it work. Which makes me think its not the switches.
