Title: Identify the plug

Attached photo of a plug. I can't figure out if its ever been connected to anything but since my brake light is out and I have checked the bulbs and both brake switches I am not sure where else to look.

Looks like the fuel pump connector to me.

Does the bike run? That's quite the mess of wiring you have there. How did you "check" the bulbs and switches? Is getting the brake lights working your present priority?

Something about the wiring looks a bit...uhhh..."cafe".   Might be the black electrical tape wrapping the wires.   

A four pole connector in that area is usually for the fuel tank.  Does the engine run with that connector hanging there like that?

I fell terribly stupid, it was late last night and I way desperately searching for a resolution to my brake light issue. The tank is off and I did indeed unplug the fuel pump from the tank explaining the connector.
I have tested for continuity from my brake switches using a multimeter so I know they are good. I also have LED tail lights which I know are good as I have tested them individually.

I have also removed the BMU and checked the solder joints and even re soldered any which looked suspect to no avail. Since I had LED bulbs put in I actually have always had the Red warning Triangle on the dash this has since disappeared which leads me to suspect a BMU issue.

So you have the bike on the center stand, with the side stand up?
Having the side stand down will kill the brake lights, unless you have it bypassed.

Now I really do feel daft. I need to stop working on this thing so late at night and get some sleep. I'm always looking at the most complex issue first.
Yes the sidestand is indeed down. Pretty sure that is the problem I will certainly check tonight! Oh well atleast I learnt a little on the BMU.
