Title: Uber tank bag mergefest
Post by: ibexonabike on July 21, 2011, 01:12:10 PM
Edit by frankenduck: Doing a little cleanup.  Decided we have way too many tank bag threads. Merging them all into this thread.

Well, I think the subject says it all. Has anyone modified their gas tank filler assembly to allow mounting of 'hard mount' tank bags (a la Givi, Cortech, etc.)? Is there enough material there to tap X # of holes and mount an adapter ring? Might be a neet trick ...

Not sure where to post this.  But, does anyone know of a source for tank bags that will fit K bikes?  Thanks

Lots of strap-on bags will fit pretty well. (Don't get a magnetic one as the tank is aluminum.)

Or keep your eye out of Fleabay for a factory one.

Hello, I bought a RKA tank bag off eBay a while back for my 89 k100rs. Not as nice as the BMW tank bag but for the price it was a very good deal and kind of classic period looking. One other site you may want to look at is the BMW Internet Riders page. Good luck looking, kenray down in Katy TX.

Couple of thoughts re the OEM tank bags.  If they are old, the elastic is gonna be questionable.  It can be repaired, but you should figure that into any bids you make on EBay. Secondly, the BMW bags use a metal hook on the front lip of the fuel tank.  That is virtually impossible to fit on my 1985 K100RS.  There's a rubber bit that fouls the hook so as often as not it's not secure and/or scratches the paint when I am wrestling with it  :-\

I am not a big tank bag fan myself, but check http://www.wunderlichamerica.com (http://www.wunderlichamerica.com) too.  I have one on my GT and while pretty spendy, is a very nice bag. Well built, nice features and cavernous.

Damn it, blasting down Interstate 80 in the hammer lane this AM to buy milk when my tank-bag rain cover blows off into the great unknown. Impossible to backtrack during rush hour without getting run over.

Holy ch!t, $26.00 for a replacement. Plan is to return and scour the tarmac thoroughly, hopefully it will still be intact roadside.

I like the Bags Connection Enduro model that I bought from Twisted Throttle.

It mounts securely (one strap around the head tube and one on either side that loops around the frame). It's easy to get out of the way for fueling (just unclip the side strap on one side and flop it over). It expands so you can ride with it big or small as needed. It has a waterproof liner sack. It has a map pocket on top, and small pockets on three sides (the back pocket is perfect size for glasses case). It's made well. It fits the tanK. In fact, I can't think of anything I don't like about it.

So when I stop for a burger or something  I just unclipthe bag and attach the backpack straps . Also easy to flip it up out of the way when I fill the tank.

Title: Ortlieb tank bag.
Post by: healthy on May 08, 2012, 03:00:15 PM
Anyone familiar with this bag? it has a "base" that has magnets and straps, but i just don't know how much it relies on the non-functional (for a k-bike) magnets.

looks like it has great flexibility in terms of strap configuration, but i'd like to hear if anyone has used, or tried to use one of them.

I've got some of their bags for my bicycle, and the waterproofness (proofiness?) is awesome, as is the ruggedness.

Ortlieb's site: http://www.ortliebusa.com/CartGenie/prod-344.htm (http://www.ortliebusa.com/CartGenie/prod-344.htm)

also, considering how expensive (or tough to find) the BMW bags are, i might just go for one of their saddlebag pairs that sling over the rear. thoughts on this style of luggage? http://www.ortliebusa.com/CartGenie/prod-342.htm (http://www.ortliebusa.com/CartGenie/prod-342.htm)

Going rate for an OEM tank bag in good used shape with rain cover and base with good zippers is $125ish although they sometimes go for less on Fleabay.

Be sure to get one that has a K75/K100 base as the K1/K1100 ones have a different base and side strap attachment configuration.

Short answer: No.

The tanks are exactly the same.  But the side panels are not.  A K1100 tank bag has a different base and attaches differently.

K75s and K100 use the same tank bag.

K1s and K1100s use the other one.

I'm loving it -- it's big and to JO's point you can bump your hand into it during extremely tight cornering, but 99% of the time you dont' even know it's there - large and cavernous -- mounting is a bit tedious to get right, but once you do it's rock solid - easy on and off for fuel fills too.

My kids gave me a RKA tank bag (as a present) for my K and my Kawa. I drove up to RKA (Saturday appointment - Northern CA) and met both Richard and Kathy, they are super people. Richard has some history with the K. My bag was built to fit both my bikes and it is serving me well to date. The bag supports the equipment that I use, as RKA advertises it would. Really makes it simple for me to transfer devises from bike to bike. Bag quality is great.  :2thumbup:

Everything seems to be made in China these days.
Or they are making things out of poorer grade components to keep the cost down.
It is nice to hear when someone makes a great product.
Local business, American made, looks like RKA is now on my list of tank bags for consideration.

I have a set of RKA bags and the rain cover coming for my K12GT. (Bought the GT used without the hard bags) I'll review them when I get them. However, It's taken quite a while to get delivery. My wife ordered them as a birthday present for me (Ordered around July 11th) and I'm still waiting for them as of today (Aug 3rd).  So they've got a back log, (which is good to hear for a US company) , but it sucks when I'm heading off for a MC camping trip tomorrow and wanted to ride the K bike.  I'll take my RT instead since it has side cases, top case etc.

I heard lots of good things on the iBMW site about the bags and so hinted to SWMBO that I would like a set. Will advise and post some pics whenever they make it here.

Duck, or someone in-the-know.

I understand there's a difference in the mounting plate for the factory tank bag for the k75/100 vs 1100/1.  Duck, you've mentioned this as have others.  Could someone be very specific about the difference and if there's a way to make a k75 mount work on an 1100 or if not, what's the issue?  thanks; i'm just in the market and trying to explore all options.

Title: Re: k75/100 vs k1100/1 tank bags
Post by: argent brick on August 27, 2012, 06:17:36 AM
Not all bases will fit on all K bikes. I think the K1100 has a larger tank. It is my understanding that the K75 and 100 bases will interchange. The K1100 base will not fit the baby brick or the 100. I can not speak with certainty about the K1, but I have seen somewhere that it fits the 1100 bikes.  Also, the zipper that fastens the base to the tank bag was changed during production so not all bases will fit on all bags.  Early bags sport a fine zipper with heavier zips later in production. I do not remember exactly when the zipper was changed, but will post the information after I look it up.

Take note that there are about four, maybe five, different styles of the tank bag made over the years. The newest version has a flat top and the outside is all black including the trim.  I think the one before it was black with a small amount of yellow trim. Earlier tank bags were different colors. With that being said, the tank bag itself seems to be interchangeable from bike to bike, if you have the correct base with matching zippers. My dealer offered me a complete new K1100 set up plus a base for my K75. You do not want to know how much that was going to cost me.

Do you already have a base and/or bag?  If you can live with an aftermarket bag, you can get some very decent bags for the same amount (or less) as a used OEM bag.

Title: Re: k75/100 vs k1100/1 tank bags
Post by: frankenduck on August 27, 2012, 06:47:01 AM
It has to do with how the side(battery) covers mount.  On K75s and K100s (including the K100RS4V) the base plate can attach directly to the lips on the lower tank seams.  On K1s and K1100s there are additional brackets that mount to the tangs on the sides of the tank that the K1/K1100 base plate attaches to.

For example, my K75, which has a K100 tank and K1100 side covers, will need the brackets and a K1/K1100 base plate and tank bag due to the side covers.

Also note that the zippers can vary from year to year so not all base plates are compatible with all tank bags.

The gas tanks are the same for K100s and K1100s. (With the exception of 85 and earlier which is the same size and shape but mounts differently.)

Bottom line: If you need a tank bag for a K1100 then get a K1/K1100 base plate and tank bag.

I looked at how they were installed on my K1100RS and the backside uses the side panel mounts for a K1100LT.

What I chose to do on my K75 was to use some M6x12 bolts and lock nuts and with M6 fender washers on the backside.

No. I'm showing you how to run a K1100 tank bag on a K75 that has a K100/1100 tank and K1100 side covers.

1 - A K75 tank doesn't have those tangs. (Except for the RT that uses a K100 tank.)

2 - If you have a K75RT or K100 then those tangs have a rubber grommet in them for the front mounting point of the side covers.

The only things K75 about that bike are the motor, frame and wiring harness.  That's why I call it a Frankenbrick.

The previous owner of my K1100LT included a Bagster (http://www.bagster.com/fr/ (http://www.bagster.com/fr/)) tank bag with my K1100LT.  I used to prefer it because it has a nice big map window, good volume, built-in rain cover and unclips at the back to flip forward for easy fill-ups and knee pads to boot. (And no zippers to break/straps to stretch.)

When I got a GPS I went back to the OEM one because it's easier to stay organized with the two main comaprtments and I don't need a big map window anymore.

The newer ones are fancier and nicer than my old one.

Anyone use a Marcee bag with their Brick? I have a line on an excellent condition Marcee 12liter for $43. Seems like a decent next step for added storage space at a good price.

I have only heard of one person using a one on a K bike however, I have read reports about many boxer owners that use them. The bag has a super reputation.

At 43 dollars, you can't go wrong.
